I've actually changed my mind, I might go for the fledgling kingdom of Sweden instead if I don't think I can do it with my regular troops.

I'm starting to get Retinues though, god damn they're good.

In my experience with prepared invasions, which is literally one of them, you get something in the area of 3000 troops if you wait most of the 2 years you have.

This queen really needs to have a son, this'd all be a lot easier if a revolution hadn't almost torn my kingdom apart.  But at least the Christians are getting kicked out of Scandinavia.

There are two ways to get a game over

You can die without a successor and the game is timed.

Could be a lot of things. Terrain, generals (and their tactics), tech level and the troops composition all can make a significant difference in a battle.

I've lost battles where I had nearly a 10k troop advantage because of horse archers.

Yes, I had no dynastic heir and no way to produce one.  The game ended at my death.

ugh, what a fucking stupid way to lose.  I know what game I won't be playing for a while.

I'm totally cool with the other forms of "losing," losing is fun after all.  Like, if there was a succession crisis and my kingdom broke into a bunch of petty states, that'd be fine.  I'd have fun continuing in the shadow of my old kingdom and seeing how things take shape.  But to have the game basically tell me "Well, you're doing great, but your invisible fertility stat is low and you didn't have much luck last generation either, so you can play for twenty more years and then go fuck yourself, game's over."

I've gotten way more than that (around 8k iirc). It probably takes Prestige or something into account.

On 19 August 937, Faste af Sandur (a courtier of the Faeroe Islands) decided to strike out on his own. He called out for any brave vikings to join him in legendary conquest. His target, sunny Marrakech. 29919 men brought their axe and shield. Unfortunately he only had 200 galleys so he couldn't get them all there in one go.

I know the weather on the Faeroes is a bit crummy, and you can only eat fried puffin for so many days straight, but 29919 is a bit excessive.
