I think that the change to gavelkind might work out nice, as giving titles to your sons will subtract from what they would get on your death. This theoretically means that before you die you could give out your titles in a reasonable manner instead of the hodgepodge which usually results, without being steered towards the exploit of giving all your titles to your primary heir. Now if only they would simply have a succession intermission of some kind where you could do this at the moment of death.

It would be interesting if you could create a sort of pseudo-will where you can pick what the primary title(s) and primary heir(s) are. It should still be a fragmenting succession law but at the same time rather flexible. Being able to pick that smart middle child for your primary holdings and giving the rest the scraps to bicker and kill each other about seems like it would add more depth instead of the current "kill all the weakling offspring so the smart one inherits" method of playing gavelkind.
Perhaps there should also be a mechanic where all possible creatable titles are created on your death to further fragment your kingdom/empire and stop title gaming.

Amazon has Crusader Kings II for $9.99 which is 75% off and 50% off for the DLCs. Not quite as great as their previous sales but if you really want the game now that's the best place.

Sword of Islam, The Republic, The Old Gods and Legacy of Rome are the only DLC that aren't purely cosmetic. You can easily play without them but you'll be missing out on playing as muslims, republics, pagans and Byzantium flavour/retinues respectively.

EDIT: New patch is out. Bizarrely Italy is not de jure HRE like stated in the patch notes and is rather de jure of it's own empire Italia. Also for some stupid reason Venice is de jure Byzantium in 1066, making them an easy merchant republic to vassalise early in game.
EDIT 2: They changed all the building names to really generic things like Keep I and Keep II. Uncool.

Unfortunately I can't buy those from Amazon, since I'm in Canada. ;v;

I guess I'll wait a few more patches and maybe a sale to get Old Gods, maybe Aztecs while I'm at it.

Okay, what?

I went on steam, and bought Legacy of Rome, since it was 5 dollars and I don't see it going down any time soon. I thought, "I'll wait until the others go down before picking them up".

So I went to check my DLC. I do not have Legacy of Rome, I have Sword of Islam, which is 10 dollars.

I thought "Shit, I didn't want to spend 10!" and checked my credit card, thinking I accidentally put the wrong item in my cart.

It's only down by 5 dollars.

What.

What?

To cap: I meant to buy a 5 dollar DLC, I got a 10 dollar DLC instead, and I was only charged 5 dollars.

I'd be happy but now I don't know how to get Legacy of Rome, because it might happen again and I don't want two copies of the DLC.

You can still buy it if you change your mailing address to something in the United States. I'm Canadian as well and I've done it for a couple of really good deals.

Also, I figured it out: I already had Sword of Islam somehow.

Anyway The Old Gods is kinda interesting. The "I want to be king" ambition is way too powerful. From what I've seen it basically comes down to whichever petty king gets that ambition first and bum rushes the other pagans. I saw Norway, Denmark and Sweden all form in ~40 years (I myself forming Norway).
The raiding mechanics are fun if not completely over-powered. Managed to upgrade all of my holdings in my capital in a few decades by raiding the Italians. I've only played as the Norse so far so perhaps it's only their looting that's broken. It could be that because newly raise levies start at 0 morale it makes norse coastal raiding much more effective than it would have been before.

Personally I've found the biggest obstacle playing as a heathen is the forced gavelkind succession. I personally just don't find it a fun succession law and find it tedious to piece together my realm every time my leader dies. The "I want to be king" ambition/subjection casus belli just makes this a chore rather than a challenge.

Tech upgrades are great, no complaining there. Haven't seen any rebels movements yet but I haven't been expanding into non-culture/non-religion lands yet.

If I have to judge I'll say that the Norse are too powerful. I've seen them completely own the British Isle and a large majority of Ireland as well as chunks of German and French lands. The other Pagans seem to expand in a more logical manner but can conquer at an alarming speed.

Anything new is always overpowered in Ck2 :P. Republics got nerfed hard the last few patches.

Is Gavelkind really the only option for pagans though? I can agree not giving them Primogeniture, but I'm definitely modding in Elective and Open for pagans. I just can't play with Gavelkind :/. If only giving them lands or marrying them do duchesses would exclude them from the succession... Now you just have two options, kill your sons, or wait until they are your brothers and then kill them.

They're forced gavelkind unless they reform their religion (which is usually no easy task). I'm also going to mod in more succession laws for heathens. I'm thinking Open/Tanistry/Gavel should be the option for petty kingdoms plus Seniority/Elective for full kingdoms/empires and ultimogeniture for the Mongols if they wish.
Gavelkind is just a pain in the plump helmet.

EDIT: Still think the TOG bookmark needs less refined catholicism in Europe. There needs to be a Celtic Christianity for a start which can act as a hybrid between Catholic and hathen. The Celts really need something like that to defend themselves against Norse onslaught. In my last game they were nothing more then little bags of gold I sometimes shook when I was low on funds.

Thinking about purchasing this since it's on sale for $10 and it sort of looks like it's in the direction of my alley.  Pros and cons?  Do you think it'll be slashed at the summer sale?

Gavelkind is best sucession.  Fill the realm with your relatives and they love you.  Only thing that compares is elective since it opens up such a wide pool of candidates.

I doubt it'll be much cheaper then now.

Gavelkind fills your realm with brothers that hates you. Sure your cousins will love you but most of your murderous brothers wants your land.
