Melee is a very fast and dirty stage of combat compared to skirmishing. Morale loss is to be expected. As to why you lost the battle, numbers, unit types, terrain, commanders, and luck all play a part. While you may have had numbers, you had terrain going against you. Besides the Heavy Infantry, what other unit types did you have going for you? What unit types did the enemy have going for them? How good were both of your commanders?

As for why you lost the second battle, if your guys routed before chances are they have low morale once they arrived at another province. Low morale=breaks easily and quickly unless fighting a very inferior force.

Tarran has the "Tarran Bug", a bug which causes the affected character to repeatedly hit teammates while dual-wielding instead of whatever the hell he is shooting at.

Well it said they had 100% morale each time so I have to rule out base morale being the problem.

When they attacked me over hills and river, I can't see why I shouldn't have won. We had pretty much the same armies, but I had huge modifiers.

I've been noticing that my armies route extremely fast from 100% every melee battle. Wikis say nothing on how morale works. Is there like, a general trait that causes your guys yo suck or something?

EDIT: Also, I've been jumping around the individual Ireland groups, and the army size changes. When I check out a province's army size, they have over 300, but when I play as them, I only have around 270 including vassals.... I'm starting to think that the game cheats to make up for bad AI.

You can only raise part of your vassal's levy and the amount is based on your laws.

Plus liege-vassal relationships influence the levy you get.

but when I play as them

Not calling their levy, when he actually plays as them. I've noticed this too. The only thing I can think is that they have a reinforce levy thing from their council on their territory.

(am sick and cannot think properly so yes, that is the technical term right now)

Oh yeah, that one's really useful if you're a OPM count.

There are many traits that cause your generals and by extension army to suck. It gets worse if your commanders decide to use bad tactics and the enemy has a high martial leader using good tactics.

You essentially met with an Alexander the Great while your characters were... not so great.

CK2's battles are a lot of luck anyway. You can have a great awesome general get steamrolled by a weaker force, if by chance, they just pick a crappy tactic and the enemy picks a great one.

Tip for the above: Don't marry the first few generations of daughters into other courts for diplomacy. Instead marry them so their children are of your dynasty to both foreign and domestic geniuses of any rank so they make a lot of courtly, dynastic, and possibly genius babies.

If you do this, you should have a whole bunch of descendants of your dynasty. You should also use the character search thing to find the best martial person you can find to educate some future war leaders and teachers from your area, including a son if you have one way down on the inheritance pole.

First check for the possibility of  inheritance in your surroundings, especially with big powers. Sometimes it's worth it to spend large amounts of gold on effecting the chain of succession in neighbors if you can get a dynasty member into inheritance with a pre-arranged marriage. Marry a daughter or other female dynasty member to the 4th+ or whatever the most eligible son is and assassinate whatever sons the the RNG does not. After the actual inheritor dies, his title is suddenly controlled by your dynasty.

Really, the FUN you will probably run into is that the king you are playing as will linger a long time after the heir reaches maturity. One way succession might not go the way you planned is that you might end up with the heir in your court being assassinated easily because he doesn't control any land. If you give him land though, he is able to pick who educates his own children, which results in wrathful, greedy, gluttonous rulers when the line of succession reaches that particular spot.

I'd kind of like to start a new game as Poland and focus on Russia this time instead of Jerusalem and try to get me an Empire for once, but then again there is that new update coming out...

EDIT: Maybe also I should try educating into intrigue instead of diplomatic masters for rulers. I also could use more gold to turn Poland and everything East of it into a fortress against the Mongol Hordes. Building only cities and improving them and other income buildings wasn't enough by itself to be able to afford necessary mercenaries while being stuck with rulers with poor money generating ability.

Even if it is controlled by someone of my dynasty, it's not essentially under my control right? Can't they simply branch off so I cannot inherit that land? Isn't there a point in which your blood relatives essentially just become another NPC?

You receive a personal relations bonus to members of the same dynasty. At the very least, it will make the AI less likely to want to invade you, and should you seal another alliance with a same dynasty ruler it will be a little more likely to aid you in wars due to having that bonus. In addition, their descendents (and possible pretenders to the inheritence) are more likely to join your court when you invite them, again due to the same dynasty bonus, though they have to dislike their current liege enough. Even if they can't though, it's also a way to obtain a few extra members of another culture group to set to rule conquered territories slightly more efficiently, due to same dynasty offsetting  different culture a little. Mostly though, it's a way to have people to invite to your court who's claims you can press, which can be useful once married to your heir, who after a few generations will hopefully be distantly enough related to not curse your lineage with inbreeding, while managing to keep the title in the dynasty's hands, perhaps with a little outside help if the player is not busy.

Click the council button, it lets you send off your councillors on different missions. The marshall has one to increase the size and reinforcement rate of levies in a province.

O.... I thought that was just the reinforcement rate.

Ok, one more question. How do generals work? Is there a certain number of troops you need for a general to take lead? When can you choose your generals? Is there an easy way to view their traits, or do I have to search each one's page separately?
