It helped a lot that I had 3 marriage ties to the HRE so they were strong allies, and I got their emperor's opinion of me to ~97 so he almost always backed me up.

Irelands politics was like a mini-europe, with petty kings and their own chain of command and traditions that all together precluded a united Ireland under an Irish high-king. Ireland in CK2 is very, VERY simplified, and that's what makes it easy.

You can do anything as Anyone in this game. Maybe it means the real life dukes were really useless and incapable. Or maybe they somehow lacked the ability to transfer their souls into their sons / daughters when they die.

FTFY

Really its just that Ireland is what people play.  My first game was as a Norwegian count, and his family currently rules the Scandinavian Empire that spans from novogrod to spain, including what would constitute the british and french empires, the kingdoms of hungary and poland,  as well as the holy lands, eygpt and mecca.

Ok, I'm pissed. Was taking over Ireland, and during my final campaign, my ruler dies, which is fine, he was old. But then my grandson (father died somehow) ended up dying soon at an early age, and then my other grandson took control, got a wound, 2 diseases, the ill trait, and then died very soon. All the while none of them actually having kids despite the ambition to have one.

I'm going to be very disappointed if this game can make you lose by sheer bad luck.

If you have a very small family, then yes there is the very, very faint chance of death-by-bad-luck.

Otherwise, I don't believe losing family members should be happening too fast for your family to replace.

O, forgot to say that I actually lost at that point. The guy with the multiple health defects was the last one. Don't really get how the succession works. I have a both genders can rule, with priority to the male law, and when one of the male grandchildren died, the other one took over, but then the successor was my nephew. So I guess it prioritizes males even if it will cost you the game......... Actually. If I load the save and change the law, I might be able to continue!

Well, I don't think the medieval people expected their succession laws to be represented in video games hundreds of years in the future, so it's not surprising the game, which is at least loosely based on history, didn't extend special courtesy to you. :P

I believe your ruler will have to have ruled for 10 years before you can change laws, though. You might have to either save and reload until your character lives long enough, or reload from when someone else was ruling.

Alternatively, you could always murder your nephews... :P

Don't know a thing about old inheritance laws, but I would assume that with women being allowed to rule, a direct bloodline related women would be chosen over a distant nephew.

I'm thinking I'll just play somewhere else. Anyone got any interesting suggestions? Otherwise I'll stick to ireland > england> the world

With the CK+ mod, you can activate Gender Equality, which basically means women have the same rights as men. It doubles your chances of keeping the kingdom in the family without dealing with wonky inheritance laws, and it's pretty fun to have your daughters marching off to war alongside your sons.

Actually, I didn't either. And now checking I realize now that the CK2 inheritance law isn't directly based on any succession law (the nearest is Semi-Salic which doesn't technically work the same) so I resend my previous statement.

Iberia has serious quick expansion potential if you can avoid dying and become strong enough.

Wait, Gender Equality also changes everyone's succession laws? I thought it just allowed females to be council members and stuff like that.

Typically the real life successions worked however the people, and especially the monarch wanted them to work. You had older sons passed over for younger more competent sons, you had daughters passed over for cousins, and vice versa...

You don't lose the game as long as the one who inherit is your kin and part of your dynasty.

I'm pretty sure it does, but I remember seeing different succession laws that had stuff to do with gender. It may depend on those.

How the hell does combat work? I attack the enemy over a river and hills with 150% their army strength. I immediately route one of their enemies, but we get into melee and all my guys instantly route. I had more heavy inf.

They attack over the river and in hills and with only 6 more guys then me, and my army loses.

We both have one general but I can't figure out how to check their general's traits.

Why are my guys so prone to routing? Why does it seem like they ignore the terrain advantages I have?
