Any tips for breaking up the HRE? I can take off one or two counties at a time when they have squabbles, but those are far and few between.

Don't break up the HRE.  Build up your empire until you are ever so slightly smaller than them and then launch an invasion to snatch it all in one fell swoop.

With a couple of sleeper agents (high intrigue daughters married off to noblemen) in the area or a ton of gold you can just keep assassinating the kaiser until a civil war breaks out and a couple of duchies become free.  It does work a lot better in the Muslim world where most of the siblings/half-siblings have titles and all have a claim on the throne causing endless possibilities for civil war.

Free 'Kingdom of Saxony' = good jumping off point for totally imploding the HRE.

Free the duchies of Saxony and Brunswick, then see if you can get one to attack the other. After Saxony is a Kingdom, next good moves would be free Bavaria or Bohemia, OR Austria if it's big enough. That's pretty much HALF of the HRE free and consolidated in 3 large Kingdoms/Duchies. The rest of the HRE will probably implode, just watch Saxony it has a tendency to get BIG if your not careful. Should your best laid plans fail, and if you are powerful enough, multiple and adjacent wars on the HRE will cause immense internal strife, which has the potential to last for decades.

I somehow managed to get the HRE throne completely by accident. I just married one of my original char's first born (a daughter) matrilinealy to one of the emperor's extra sons. Eventually people died off and the son found his way into some titles, then he died off and left a couple duchies to a son of my dynasty. Then the next thing I know my original char dies off and I'm playing as my grandson, who was apparently favored since I turned my only son into a merchant republic. The grandson, who is still Irish Catholic, is now holding two empire titles (I had formed Brittania after starting as a custom 16 year old in Dublin, died at 80 with an 11 year emperor reign). I missed the part where he somehow went from small time duke to the HRE, but I've suddenly found myself playing as a double emperor with vast power.

And of course the first thing I did was make an antipope and vassalize the papacy. Thanks for letting my grandfather invade England mister Pope, now die.

You win a free walking off of the plank in shark infested waters somewhere in the Caribbean.

Obviously modded, it's at the start-date. 15 September 1066.

What he modded, and why, and how it is winning, I don't know. >_>

So, got this thing a couple of days ago as I found the fact that it supports linux interesting.

I'm very, very, very annoyed with Paradox's DLC criteria, as there is a questionably big ammount of features dependent on it and it's ridiculously expensive.

Yeah. It's sorta a thing like that. But. It's all pretty reasonable. 40 dollars for the base game is quite reasonable, and honestly all the big expansions are worth it (Except maybe sunset invasion). But in the end it ends up at 70 dollars, and it's just sorta. A lot isn't it? Hard to draw what is actually wrong with it though.

It's not like they are cutting parts off the game to sell later, and it's not like they sold it as a work in progress or anything. Buying them as they come out has always been sorta reasonable to me, but coming into it now, a year later, I can understand what you are talking about.

What. There is actually a high amount of DLC (!) features NOT dependent on you buying the actual DLC or not.

You just have to catch the DLC on sale. A while back the entire package (CK2 with all DLC) was on sale for only $9.99 on Amazon. Steam often runs 75% off sales for all the DLC too.

Do excuse me, but Paradox always sells things as a work in progress. It's almost like a tradition to see stuff released and made playable a month or two later with a few priority patches.

Carry on.

DLC isn't really terribly important. You can't use Muslims, Republics or restore the Roman Empire if you don't get the DLC. Every other features are patched to the base game. Most of the DLC is just pictures and music, not very important.

It's also mostly 75% off in Steam every other month.
