The GOT mod is updated! Now I'm going to start playing it.

I wonder, would that mod make any sense to someone who has never read the books? Or would it just be a confusing morass of names and references?

Sure, I understand it, and I've never read the books.  Course, I brushed up on wikipedia to at least mildly understand the mod.

Plus, don't they have a TV show or something?

I've only watched the TV show and it makes decent sense to me.

You don't really need to know the show/books to get the mod. It would just be just CK2 in a different setting. Also with dragons.

It slightly bothers me that the AGOT mod happens in what is basically just one empire. While it doesn't feature that prominently on the series/first book (one character is trying unsuccessefully to gather an army there, which doesn't intersect with the rest of the story. And a number of people are from there) there's a rather large amount of land outside what we see in the mod.

There's always the possibility that they'll add the Republics across the narrow sea, but at the current scale there's no way they could fit the entire other continent in the mod, especially when much of that land is basically just unpopulated wasteland.

Possible hints to new DLC. If this is true then I'm a little bit disappointed that they haven't taken a break to balance out the game at all. Republics are fairly broken and Muslims are just insane.I suppose new features are welcome since modders seem to do a fine job balancing the game anyway.

The thread links to a facebook page which has a mostly blanked out picture that follows CKII's artstyle. Judging from the very small portion of the picture presented I can make out what appears to be a stormy sky with faint traces of aura borealis and a half frozen sea. To me this indicates either two things. Playable northern pagans (most likely) or a northern crusade expansion/the rise of the Teutonic Order - this may (although unlikely) include playable theocracies and/or holy orders.
Of course the most sensible thing, in my eyes, is to release playable northern pagans while expanding the northern crusades as well. What we get depends on whether they plan on doing a "small" Legacy of Rome DLC or a bigger more fleshed out expansion like Sword of Islam or The Republic.

Possible things we could see in playable pagans could include:
No concept of bastards.
Tribal successions laws. Highest marital inherits, etc.
More fleshed out conversion and resistance to conversion.
A new set of non-Abrahamic virtues/sins.
Being able to incorporate non-blood into your dynasty.
New dynasties or "clans" being formed when relatives declare independence.
A system of "honour" might replace piety which monitors stuff like oaths.
Tribal succession crises.
Cults and lesser deity worship.
Raiding and thralls.
Blood feuds/clan warfare.
New UI, new sprites/faces

On the bright side, each DLC means a game update for those who don't purchase the DLCs.  In the end, I hope they offer an all-DLC pack for those who have the base game and want to purchase all the DLCs at a reduced price.  Traditionally, Paradox skips this step and eventually releases an game plus all expansions version, but it would be nice to be rewarded for actually purchasing the base game.

The fun part is that most of the features inside each DLC are actually given to everyone.

Is the crew making the DLC the same crew fixing the bugs? I seem to remember on the Aztec DLC controversy that they mentioned the crew working on it was different than the patching crew and Republic crew, so it could be the same here, with two separate crews.

Yeah, which is a pretty darn nice thing for them to do. It also saves people from having missing-DLC problems.

Tarran has the "Tarran Bug", a bug which causes the affected character to repeatedly hit teammates while dual-wielding instead of whatever the hell he is shooting at.

The thing about the Aztec DLC is that it was just simple events that already existed in the game and slightly modified. It introduced no new mechanics so the brunt of the work was done by a "skeleton crew" which included mainly artists.
It could be true that they have a bug-fixing team and a "new mechanic" team but it seems a little unlikely considering the size of Paradox studios. A northern pagan DLC and/or a Teutonic Order would have to introduce a whole range of new mechanics so it would be likely all hands on deck.

I really don't see why they just don't cannibalise or take inspiration from one of the major mods. Project Balance would be perfect for this, even if it's just the way they implement holy wars.

At the very least we've got Wiz, the CK2+ modder, "learning the ropes" fixing bugs. So we've at least got him. Well, unless they decided that 8 days is enough of a "learning the ropes" period.

1.091 changelog is announced.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
The excellent
- Anti-Pope will now remain as an Emperor's vassal if you press his claim to the Papacy
- Can now ask to join Muslim Invasions
- AI will now ask to join Muslim Invasions when appropriate, and is slightly more inclined to defend neighbours against a Muslim Invasion than a Holy War
- AI: Will now value prestige effects of marriage at a more reasonable level
- Added a check for negative fertility on either parent to prevent impregnation of or by celibate characters, eunuchs, etc
The sad
- No longer possible for close relatives to become a married character's mistress

Those are all pretty great. I really love the whole Papacy finally being vassalised if you make an anti-pope, finally gives it a point. Personally I don't know why they're bothering to balance Muslim invasions. They just need to be flat out removed.

Personally I like Muslim invasions. In reality Muslims invaded Anatolia and pushed the byzantines to the bosphorus in the few decades between 1066 and the first crusade, and that's impossible to replicate in Holy Wars. They just need western anatolia to be its own de jure kingdom and the whole fatimid invasion of greece thing won't happen without the byzantines being practically destroyed already, as the invasion cb can only be used against bordering kingdoms in 1.091. The prospect of muslims uniting iberia and invading aquitaine may seem unlikely, also, but it's not like it didn't almost happen a century or two earlier, and the player should be allowed to tackle the challenge.

Ok, picking this up again, and I had a few questions:
1. Standing armies (retinues?). How do I get these? Do I have to hit a certain military tech?
2. Plots and people: How do I sway people to join my plots, even people who like me tend to no want to help due to the 2 base reluctance.

1: First you need the expansion that the retinues are part of. Without it the screen for them will be there, but unusable. After you got that retinues are based on how many people you can raise. A percentage of that (Based on certain techs) goes into your retinue limit that you can tend spend on retinues.

2: Bribery. I find that if people like me, and don't like the person I am plotting against, a bribe will almost always be enough to get them into my plot. If Bribery is not enough (and with enough practice you should be able to tell at a glance if a bribe will tip them over) I normally find it not worth the hassle to do other things. But if they are your vassal then something like giving them court positions or land may work.
