Also if you're old you can go on a tyrannical banishing spree and die shortly over. If I really want to be cheesy I wait until I'm really low and I'm ill or stressed and then start the banishing. Muslim leaders can go on ramadan which have a high chance of killing an older leader if you choose to keep fasting.

Something I realized in my current game as the Emperor (sometimes Empress) of Brittania of House Mathrafal. You can break a vassal power very easily, if very gamey, by arranging him to be excommunicated, then arresting and releasing him until he rebels. That gives you an excuse to revoke one of its titles. Then you can release him again (or ransom if the vassal is rich), and proceed to imprison again until he has no title. Works best if you have an antipope instead of depending on papal favor.

And if there's any weak pagan or muslim country around, just declare an occasional holy war (or better yet, specially if you are far away from them, just join in some holy war by some blob like the HRE) so you get piety.

Gamey as hell, but works wonder to break some problematic vassal.

The easiest way to game someone to rebel is to raise their levies and give them the "Court Jester" title. This was way easier before factions but it's still possible.

If you have the depressed trait the suicide decision shows up in the intrigue menu.  Depressed might be the single most useful trait in the game for this reason.

The easiest way to game someone to rebel is to raise their levies and give them the "Court Jester" title. This was way easier before factions but it's still possible.

The issue is that a failed imprisonment of a landed vassal is a (nearly?) certain revolt. If he is excommunicated, no one cares if you imprison him (except himself of course). Trying to imprison someone is instantaneous, no matter if it succeeds or fails. Releasing someone also is instantaneous (although ransoming is not). If you get the vassal excommunicated you can simply imprison and release the vassal mid pause until he rebels, without passing even a single day, with the only cost being the initial 100 piety to excommunicate him.

Changing subject a bit: Is there any real issue with keeping an antipope? It makes your bishops much easier to manage, excommunications of vassals and divorces much easier to do, and I think it might prevent external forces from excommunicating you. Yeah, it reduces the religious authority of the pope, but if I remember right, you can still use holy wars to increase it, plus it's not that hard to just deal with any heresy that crops up.

Keeping an anti-pope will drain the moral authority of the church. In time, you'll end up in a situation where everyone is a heretic.

Seriously?  If so, that's an amazing little touch.

So I started off and made Ireland, and just figured I would work on maintaining Ireland in all of its glory, right? I gave out the three middle duchies and made Doges, and then I upgraded the cities of the top and lower duchies. Fast forward about 80 years, I have maxed the cities and am starting to max the castles and temples, and the pope calls a crusade. Now I don't really want Jerusalem, but the crusader bonus will help my young ruler get all the tax money from the church officials (everyone loved the pope, so it was about half him half me), so I decided to go help out with a 16k stack (only 6k from myself, I just bought both holy orders and ran to Jerusalem). I got there and after setting landfall, switched my commanders out for 2 20 and 1 21 marshal commanders. I notice a 25k Fatmid doomstack, decide to eat it, and win. Granted I only had 7k people left, but I still beat them, and they ran away with about 8k. Now comes to my main point. After I won, I decided to just leave (had a doge rebel and had to take care of that) and about 40 years later when the crusade was over... I won Jerusalem. I booted up an old save and I still somehow had 19% contribution (most other people had 10%). Is this normal? I only did that one battle.

Yes that's normal. You get more bonus for all the spilled blood of both Muslims and Catholics. I won more crusades by feeding my entire army to their doomstack and wait for HRE to finish them off.

...You contribute more by losing men?

Who the heck thought that that was a good idea?

It makes a kind of sense. Maybe not from a design standpoint, but just the idea makes sense.

Obviously if your soldiers spill their blood harder, more, and against greater odds, they are the more pious people of Europa.

I think it's more that participation in big battles is results in more 'war contribution' than most sources. Battles like that can be worth large amounts of war score and prestige, afterall.
