My god those Fatmids.

Oh, this is nothing. I've seen them take all of Spain and Italy before.

Should I be glad the Fatmids in my current game are being smashed by the Papacy then?

Yes, as long as you aren't a Muslim yourself.

"Dev. Diary 0" is up.

http://forum.paradoxplaza.com/forum/showthread.php?630854-Crusader-Kings-II-Legacy-of-Rome-Dev-Diary-0-Clearing-the-Fog-of-War

A little odd they didn't include the standing armies as part of the patch. Not sure if I really have all that much interest in this dlc, not being a massive fan of the Byzantines. A DLC focusing almost completely on a single nation for 6 dollars is a bit much in my opinion. Chances are I'll wait until it drops a bit just so I can pick up the retinue system.

EDIT: Although there seems to be a major decision for the Byzantines to "restore the Roman Empire to it's former glory" which seems like it would be a fun goal at later date when the empire is collapsing. So that could be interesting.

"restore the Roman Empire to it's former glory"

Silly Byzantophiles. To hell with "former glory", go make yourself some new glory.

By conquering Russia...  ... and Great Britian, maybe west Africa too, 'cause why not?

Yah, it sounds like minecraft with content, you have obviously missed the point, people dont like content, they like different coloured blocks.
Seems to work fine with my copy. As soon as I loaded the human caravan came by and the world burst into fire.

Finally bought this game, man is it a blast! Already quit one game. Started as a Earl in Northern Ireland. After several years I finally fabricated a claim on my neighbour, only to have my military stomped. Decided starting as an idependent Earl was a bit much. Any advice on how to conquer in this situation? Can you convince a neighbour to go to war with you maybe?

From memory the easiest dukedom to play in Ireland is Lienster since it has a decent military and claims on other counties. The best way to get allies is to marry into other dynasties and call them into battle. They'll usually almost always go to war with your enemies if you have a decent relationship with them.
Early game is usually forging decent alliances and building up your buildings in your holdings so you get more troops/income. I would stray away from conquest if you're a "minor power" until you've built up a bit you may even want to wait for a few generations if you just don't have the troops to expand. The AI rarely invests in buildings so you can usually outpace your neighbors extremely quickly with both military and economy.

CKII wiki is a wonderful place to start when you want the basics of the game. Keeping Your Vassals Weak is a must read article, in my opinion.

Ireland is my preferred recommendation for newbies since the Isle is mono-culture and mono-religious. That makes expansion much easier and there much less penalties for occupation. It's easy to go from a count to duke to king and experience the basics of each, later the Empire of the British Isles could be formed. Ireland is rarely a target for conquest from any other country since England, Norway and Scotland will be busy fighting civil wars and culture shifts. Ireland can also expand into Wales and Brittany extremely easy and with the aid of a few mercs and holy orders can even win the crusades and claim the Holy Lands! Now that's Irish Piety.

If Scotland does well, the main thing between you and Ireland will be Ulster. If they don't do well, seemingly nobody will attempt to curb your rampage through Great Britain in the hundred years after you unify as a kingdom. It's great.

Another question! Do you HAVE to lead your Demense Levis yourself? I had an ally request aid in a war, but my ruler was getting on in his years and I wanted him at home producing an heir and not dieing, but the war was a good distance away, so I didn't want to send my Vassals Levis, because then they'd hate me.
Can't I assign the duty to someone else (my marshal maybe?).

You have to have at least low crown authority, I believe.

There's a trick to it- raise you weakest levy (You will lead it now,) then raise the rest of you levies and disband the weak, initial one. Voila- you're no longer leading any troops.

Crown authority is needed to appoint army commanders, not levy commanders- there are still individual people "in charge" of their respective levies within the army stack, even if they don't affect the battle.
