Question: If I don't have Sword of Islam, but convert to a muslim religion, do I get to use the new muslim mechanics?
Devs have said that it will be an instant gameover. You can become pagan / Zoroastrian and still play on but not Muslim. I can't confirm it as I bought the DLC on day one.

The muslim mechanics are tied to a tag that can be applied to religions. If you don't have SoI and you convert to a religion with the muslim mechanics tag, you get an instant game over.

You can play any religion that doesn't have the tag, hell you can even remove the tag from muslims then convert freely to them... but they'd then again just play like renamed christians as they did before SoI.

Seems to work fine with my copy. As soon as I loaded the human caravan came by and the world burst into fire.

That is fine, I never planned on turning away from the One True God for The Other One True God anyways.  :P

It was more of a "gee, could I get all these neat feature for free" type of question.  Thanks for answering, I've gotta wait until the price goes down before I get the expansion.

Okay, I'm not much of a CK2 expert so I'd like to ask this: I started as the Orsini in the earliest date possible. As soon as I unpaused, the entire southern part of the HRE, plus Bohemia and some duchies in the french border, declared independance from the empire. Does this happen regularly or is this a rare occurance?

Happens all the time. They're not de jure part of the HRE and they're different cultured. As for Bohemia, they're just independently minded.

The Empire usually loses some, and beats a few others down. Sometimes holds it together better than others. If you're playing in the HRE (I dunno who the Orsini are, sorry) you can usually help hold it together by beating up on 'em... or if you're in the area, simply not revolting will also help keep things together.

Every single kingdom and empire in this game is a timebomb. It's basically expected that they'll fragment every once in awhile. You can plan wars around the next royal fuck-up.

Out of curiousity, the Prince and the Thane mod says that it adds more "Cultural Melting pot events". would anyone care to tell me what these would be?

Saxon + Norman = English, basically, is one of if not the only cultural melting pot event in the base game. So it expands that to other cultural mixes, presumably.

Has anyone seen what happens when mercs win the invasion when you don't pay them? I was trying to do some science with them today but it seems the current mod I'm playing doesn't allow the mercs to invade you when you don't pay and it seems to screw up the vanilla game.
Assuming that you save just before you lose the war and then play as another country and watch the results. Does the ruler just change to a "lowborn" general or is the general's dynasty added to the highborn list and he rules like any other lord? Does it change the government to a republic? How does the other lord of the land react? What happens to the merc band and the soldiers in it?

Cultural melting pots during the time period I can think of are Sicilian, Maghreb.. I'm sure there's others.

Don't mercenary captains always have random dynasties? Doges and wali emirs have those random dynasties as well.

The Navarran company has ruled the duchy of Genoa for about 100 years in my current game. I don't think they can be hired anymore.

I think they act as a free extra military force, though. I remember someone from the demo first losing to a merc captain and becoming his vassal, then inheriting both the captain title and the kingdom back because the laws became elective/open succession. From there on (I think) he had a free merc army at his beck and call.

Might not actually work the same way anymore, of course.

Really? When I open the culture events folder it seems there is only Saxon + Norman.

The Fatimid Caliphate (Egypt) starts with the Mamluks vassalized. You can hire them and they are a lot cheaper than normal companies even though they are twice the size. It might be free in defensive wars but I'm not sure.

The Byzantines also start with some Scandinavian company. That might just be at later starts though, as I always play as them after Rum exists.
