Fun fact: I left and people still vote for me. I think they're mostly my vassals. I'm only slightly losing to another dude, even though I'm not in the HRE. Gah.

Crap, if I get a really good king I'm doomed to be the Emperor. ...Those words sound silly together.

Also, France becoming heretic while I've got some land there (massive inheritance of Aquitaine from one of my previous ruler's mother) was a bad idea. Holy warring for France. Oh yeah.

Sadly, it's not actually possible to fully leave the HRE. Any de jure lands are tentative subjects to the de jure leaders.

It's kinda of like how a foreign king will request your vote for laws he wants to pass because you own some land inside his de jure realm. The only way to fully get out of the HRE is to actually dismantle it yourself.

Sounds like someone is a descendant of Charles Martel: Unifying the lands of France and Germany while vehemently not wanting the crown to the Holy Roman Empire.

Now you just need to push the Moors out of Spain and the Turks out of the Balkans to make it official.

Wow. Playing as Novogord in the Prince and the Thane mod is easy as hell.
My father, ruler of Kiev, invaded Rostov and claimed it, I just had to kill my brother to be the first in line to get the two duchies. I could then easily form the two Northern Russian kingdoms with the gold I got from expelling the Jews and piety for attacking the Finnish pagans. From there I could attack the Cumans to the South and make the final southern Russian kingdom and then politely ask the remaining duchies to be my vassals.

It's my first ruler and all I need now is to save up enough money to form the Empire of Rus and hopefully live long enough to change the Succession Laws from Gavelkind to Elective. Not sure where to go after that, suppose I'll take back the steppes and halt the Mongols. Maybe even take over and reinforce the Byzantine Empire.

Decadence is pretty horrible. As the Fatimid Caliph I need to constantly wage holy wars and still my decadence is approaching 70% :S

At least it's not as bad as the d'Hautevilles. They were the target of both a (sunni) Jihad and aa Muslim invasion. Even though the Jihadists had most of their territory the Tunnisian invaders won the war and vasalised most of the Norman counts and dukes. After a decade or so the d'Hautevilles were fully converted but they only had 1 county left. That means there was a single count with 100 living family members. Guess how high his decadence is :P.

Just won a crusade for Jerusalem with second highest war contribution as duke of Provence. Denmark had the highest and got the kingdom. I wasn't too bothered about this because I thought I'd be getting fancy traits and boons from the pope but I don't seem to have received anything from it. The pope and the Danish king got the crusader trait.

Getting close enough to becoming a Tsardom and I'm wondering if it's worth it to start destroying titles. I know it's generally considered a good thing to destroy all kingdom titles but one so you get kingdom shift but what, if any, would be the benefit of destroying all king titles and only having an Empire?

I have to admit it sounds rather awesome (and a little historical) to be the absolute leader of Rus with no possible leader. I was going to go with elective though, mostly because my first borns always seem to be dropped on their head as babies.

That's one of the first mistakes I made. I thought I was either going to get awesome traits for helping out or the land was going to be split up between the Crusaders with the highest war score. I only had about 3% less and I got nothing out of it, apart from the crusader trait which half the world also got. Really disappointing stuff.

When I don't have the ressources to be sure to have the best war score in a crusade, I just raise the ost with all my vassals, land on the target land, get the crusader trait (as well as all my vassals and my sons if possible), and then I come back home and call it a day. The crusader trait is great, it pretty much makes you immune to excommunication from the current pope, and crusaders have pretty good relation bonus with other crusaders so all your vassals love you if you led them to crusade.

Unless you plan to give away the kingdom titles destroying them is better (as long as you don't care about the loss of prestige  / dynasty score). I wouldn't ever do it, as I like hoarding titles though.

I'd also advise to create the title as your heir once you inherit. I say this because you will lose the long rule bonus when you become emperor. You'll even get a short rule penalty.

If this was how the actual Crusades went down then we would of seen the Renaissance a lot earlier. A medieval lord travelling all across Europe to Arabia to have a friendly debate with someone who doesn't share their religion before heading all the way home paints a rather nice mental image for me.

And in front of a large army of men likely sweating in hot armor, confused out of their minds.

Question: If I don't have Sword of Islam, but convert to a muslim religion, do I get to use the new muslim mechanics?

As for titles, I generally just pile them onto my prefered heir.  Even if they don't inherit, the person who does will probably pass on the dynasty to the person I wanted sooner or later.

I used to divy out titles to all my family members, but that promotes a ton of incest, which I find a bit squickish, so I don't do that any more.  I'll probably go so far as to create a strong non-blood dynasty in my realm to act as a marriage lighting rod.  That's right children, marry into the Loyal family and not your own.

Next child that marries their cousin gets executed, I swear it...
