Currently playing the Lux Invictus mod as the Umayyad Caliphate. I've had this longstanding tradition of marrying into the Idrisids and Al-Muratibin Sultanates, for the purpose of alliances. Recently, the old sultan of the idrisids died, and the son which didn't inherit was quite jealous of his brother, so I invited him to my court and converted him to my sect of islam, married him to a couple of my half-sisters, and pressed his claim. Unfortunately, it seems you're unable to vassalize king-level titles for some bizarre reason, though I think it partially my own fault to not have the foresight to grant him a holding in my demesne beforehand. On the bright side, I think I may be able to make it work through the use of the console without much trouble.

Maybe because Caliphates count as Kingdoms if I recall correctly?

Regardless, Kings tend to not want to want to remain sovereign. I seem to recall some "I am a King!" modifier giving them plenty of minuses when you ask to vassalise them.

You'd had to give him a king title in your realm first to get him to stay as your vassal. Any lesser holdings he'd just take wirh him as he went independent.

Caliphs used to be empror-tier but since SoI they are dukes, although you will be called caliph whether the caliphate is your highest title or not.

Don't you hate it how you can vassal a lot of people, but if there is ONE sea province perventing you from connecting, their all like "Oh no your realm is across a Kilometer or two of water! Your too far away!". Its damn frustrating.

Untrue, caliph titles are emperors, though one starts off vassalized to a king at game start. Kings can't try to vassalizing caliphs either because they're higher rank.

Thats weird, because If Caliphs have higher titles then kings, it shouldn't be possible for one to be a vassal. I have also had Caliphs vassaled in the past I believe. I wasn't the one vassaling them, but I did see it happen.

I don't think starting out an emperor as a vassal would be anything more than a line in the text file, to be honest.

As I said, before SoI caliphs were emperor ranked but after the patch they became dukes. If they are still emperors in your game your game hasn't patched yet, which should happen automatically. Even using a mod won't make kings able to vassalize emperors so that can't be it either.

Just completed a successful invasion of Scotland-Ireland. There's a Jimena on the throne of France, and my grandson should inherit a claim to the throne of England, so things are looking pretty good for my dynasty. The HRE is fractured probably beyond repair, and somehow the Byzantine Emperor converted to Catholicism, so Russia is the only Orthodox stronghold currently remaining.
