If I remember correctly Poland stopped them in real life. I might be thinking of the wrong horde though.
EDIT: Ooh, double post. Naughty open new tab opener me.

Poland didn't stop them, exactly, the Mongolians simply didn't have time to conquer it as the Khan of Khans died and they decided running back to Mongolia to crown his successor was more important than occupying the backwards, barbaric little place called Europe ;) And then the Mongolian Empire kind of fell apart so it never came up again.

As far as I know, the only places where the Mongols where actually halted where Japan (because of them damn kamikazes), South-East Asia (because of them damn jungles), and Egypt/Arabia (Because of them damn deserts). I don't think they took India either, but I can't remember the reason.

Yeah, we are also being told that lithuanians held back the mongols, which isn't exactly true either. Just saying that somebody stopped somebody is a gross oversimplification.

Mongols where actually halted where Japan (because of obscenely bad weather/luck)

Fixed that for you. First time Mongols invaded Japan, gaint tsunami struck their fleet, entire Mongol army decimated, Japanese didn't lift a finger. Second time they invaded with a far larger force, gaint tsunami struck their fleet again, entire Mongol army decimated, Japanese didn't lift a finger. Mongols never tried invading them ever again.

"Stupid truth, always resisting simplicity." They did manage to conquer Russia, though, which is pretty darn impressive, considering Russia's track record.

Mongols: "We're the exception!"

There's a whole Russian Right Wing movement where they deny that the Mongols ever set foot on Slavic soil, mostly due to "evidence" of paintings done by people who have never seen a Mongol before. Always interesting to see how people try to manipulate history.

Pretty sure that's what he meant. The storms that caused the tsunamis were named 'kamikaze', 'divine-wind(s)', because of the fact that both happening right during a Mongol invasion was seen as divine protection. It's where the WWII kamikaze took their names. Some of the Mongolian ships did manage to reach Japan, though, and there were some skirmishes along the beaches before the weakened Mongol force was driven back.

Though to be fair, the Mongolians hailed from Mongolia and Siberia, which are like the only places on earth that are more Russian than Russia, so they did have an unfair advantage there ;)

I always considered it somewhat impressive how China handled the Mongol situation.

(Warning, gross oversimplification ahead.)

Kublai Khan takes over China. China rolls with it, crowns them, and "Oh, by the way, your name is Yuan now, this is still China."

Yeah, the Chinese are sort of the reverse-Borg. "Our resistance is futile. You will be assimilated!"

There's innumerable examples of horse-riding nomads storming in off the steppes, overthrowing the Emperor, and congratulating themselves on having taken over the jewel of the known world. And then realizing that there's 10,000 of them and 100,000,000 Chinese. So they're going to have to learn to speak the language, and hire a bunch of Han to run the bureaucracy, and teach their kids, and...next thing you know, their decadent Chinese-speaking descendants are being overthrown by the next batch of Siberian horselords.

This assimilation effect was so well known that when the Manchu took over, Nurhachi placed his summer capital deep inside Manchuria, and demanded all the nobles and their sons attend him so they could practice horse-riding, archery, speaking Manchu, etc.

It still didn't work. :P

To some extent, they did...the Timurids were descendants of parts of Genghis's great horde that remained in the areas of Transoxiana that he conquered. They, in turn, evolved into the Mughal Empire which conquered the nothern half of India and most of Pakistan.

To bring this back on topic a bit...in my current game, the Golden Horde converted to Orthodoxy, which was a bit of a surprise. Unfortunately, they were then shattered by the various Russian princes and the Poles. I was kind of looking forward to seeing what havoc an Orthodox horde could wreak. And in the vacuum left by their fall, the Ilkhanate has become the Mighty Scythe of Allah, cutting a swath across the land from the Volga river nearly to Cairo. I'm very curious to see just how far they'll go (and what monstrosity they will become in EU3).

I've managed to weather the storm brought about by Finn the Kinslayer, executing him shortly before my death and leaving the kingdom to his son, Oswiu (later Oswiu the Great), who brought the Lords of Moray to heel, and forged the Triple Crown of the Celts by adding Wales into his fold. It was in his reign that the capital was moved from Ireland, first to Gwent and thence into Cumberland.

Lost my shot at the Norwegian crown, but it was a bad time for it anyways. It was briefly annexed unto the kingdom of Castille, but after two ill-loved Castillian monarchs, a major revolt placed the crown (and most of the Norwegian lands) back under House Staden. I still have a weak claim but it's not worth the effort. My main goal now is to whittle down England enough to forge the Imperial Crown of Brittania. The English throne has been held by the House of Yngling since Harold Hardrade deposed Harold the Confessor (the name England obviously deriving from "Yngling-land") :P

But England recently came under the sway of a rival upstart Norwegian house, that of Nott. The "rightful" heir, Prince Ivar Yngling, remains Duke of Kent with nearly half the kingdom to his name, but his attempt at a civil war failed, despite the support of most of the lords of the realm and my own interference. It's an elective monarchy, and I hold the county of Durham (as part of Northumberland), so I'm an elector and candidate. Not sure whether to attempt a peaceful HRE-style path of diplomacy and intrigue to ascend the throne by election, or just wait until a moment when they're torn by civil war again and just try to nom up a big honking chunk (either the Midlands, loyal to Prince Ivar; or Somerset/Devon, loyal to the usurper Queen Gertrud).

Gotta say, I have quickly come to LOVE this game.  :D

I just crowned myself Empress of Hispania after inheriting mega Castille-Andalusia-Leon-Galicia as Aragon. Now, time to kick the Muslims off the mainland and reclaim Portugal - I'll probably even let someone else take the crown. Ah, empires are so nice. So much less messy than a ton of kingdoms.

This was my first try in Iberia, it really is such a nice place. Started as Duke of Barcelona in... a time where it exists.

Next, you must arrange for a cadet branch of your family to become Frankish/Occitan, then help manuever them into the French royal (and then Imperial) crown....then marry them back into your fold to join the Empires :D

I'm trying to get the Empire of Brittania for the same reason...so I can start passing the royal crowns to my kids without sundering what I've worked so hard to accumulate under the Ua Briainn name.

The current French king is, rather amazingly, Finnish. I had nothing to do with this but I ain't complaining, being one myself IRL. He's also my relative, I think, though not of my dynasty.

England owns approx. half of France (due to the time period I started in), so I'll have to take both of their thrones.

Man, you can earn so much money from arresting/capturing people and ransoming them early on.

And man, my Chancellor really needs to do do something with that dang 20% chance of fabricating a claim. I want to found the Empire of Britannia some time in the next 200 years, y'know! I'm almost considering going infidel or heretic just to be able to invade folks with an abandon. I know I can hold off most invaders with my impressive personal army of 10K, not to mention my vassals' 14K. I gobbled up as many infidel lands as I could over in Norway and Sweden, but dang if everyone else didn't have the same idea.
