I took care of my issue by just attempting to jail them. It failed, I took my territory back, and then banished them, taking the titles. The -160 due to tyranny only made a couple vassals of mine go below 0, so I just gifted them gold. Everyone LOVED my ruler, so it wasn't too bad.

It's been around 25 years since I started my game. It seems like the pope is a pacifist. He never called any crusades.

I think it has been that way in most of my games... It takes a bit for the crusades to get rolling.

Heheheh. Oh this is too good. Two of my vassals are at war, see. And I'm at war with someone else. And that someone else is coming through the land they're in, so they fight my vassals...

11K stack? Down to less than 6K from fighting my vassals. Without me even lifting a finger. ;D

Oh, well. Anybody know a good way to raise Piety other than crusading? 6k Prestige and -50 Piety makes it too obvious that I'm a power-hungry kinslayer and usurper kind of a ruler.

Donating land to the pope can raise piety, but there's a limit to how much that works. It's best to do with low value land you've just conquered, and the best way to get low value land is get into a holy war with the infidels!

Of course, this is essentially just crusading on your own without the pope first approving it. Also there's a chance when you're fighting infidels and you have a good relationship with the pope that he will give you a load of cash.

Weird, in most of my games the pope is very quick to call on the realms of Christiandom to smash their faces hopelessly into the Muslim hoards. Usually I just show up to get the crusader trait and leave before the ~10K armies can show up and curb stomp the meandering groups of ~500 Christians. I've yet to see a successful Christian crusade.

As for piety, invade a heretic nation. You'll occasionally get chances to force conversion, giving you 10 piety a pop. The pope bugs me almost constantly when I do that, to the point where the revolt chance hasn't gone away before I get another 10 piety. Because it's an event rather than a straight up penalty, the revolt chance doesn't go up. You also get piety bonuses just from doing personal holy wars on heretic counties, so you're bound to get lots of piety if you're careful. If you're not in a heretic-rich area, get one of your neighbors excommunicated and win a war against them. You get something like 100 piety when you do that, but you don't get any land (I think).

Other than that, you can build churches and give counties to bishops. You can get quite a bit from that, but you're risking good income that might go straight to the pope instead of you.

Wait, really?

Either you haven't been playing for as long as I think you have, or the AI in your game has been really abysmal at capitalizing on Holy Orders.

In the early game crusades tend to end in failures because the Muslim nations start out so much stronger than the Latin ones. Sometimes the crusades work, but only if the Muslims have been weakened by infighting and the Latin nations haven't.

I've only went through one game so far, and the first crusade was a success, AI Irish Kingdom took Jerusalem.

Okay, this is just silly.

'Ireland', a kingdom which has the majority of east-north-east and south-east France, and most of southern Ireland (the island), is caught in a 16 year war with a 2 county duke of Bedford, a 'Berry' half the size of the kingdom of 'Ireland', and a one-county Leinster. All of Bedford is occupied, but Bedford with it's wimpy 500 strong army assisted by 1500 of their allies is occupying a huge chunk of 'Ireland' northern France. Berry and Leinster have not occupied anything, and have not been occupied at all. Bedford is the leader and is the attacker(!).

Let me repeat, this war has been going on for 16 years. Jesus christ guys, just finish the damn war. It's not like you need to prove anything, I get it, you're all badass, just finish that crazy war.

So, in my latest game as Wales, I noticed that Cornwall's "de jure drifting" counter had almost reached 100. England had been pretty vulnerable before; First Norway won the war, then there were constant revolts (resulting in the Norwegian and English crowns splitting with England owning more than half of geographical Norway, and de facto Norway's capital being in the Orkneys), then the House of Godwin took back the English throne, then Scotland, aided by France, invaded and took a sizeable chunk out of the northern parts. Finally, during another bout of vassals revolts, the Danish king decided to press his claim on the English crown and won. I could've taken Cornwall at almost any time during these tumultuous times, but I simply assumed there would be more of them later and went to work securing ky holds in Ireland and my first born's heritage of Bretagne, as well as my other children's inheritance of other Duchies. Then, I finally noticed the counter - 70-something out of a hundred. That sucked.

Denmark, at this time, owned not only the Danish lands and England, but also said 50%+ of Norway, was way to big for me to take on. So, I waited. Surely Denmark wouldn't be able to hold on to all these foreign lands, right? There would be independence wars all over, right? But no, it was completely stable. And the counter kept ticking down.

So. It was time to act. The Dane King might have been a god damned saint, but his heir was a spoiled brat without ruling experience (and with only a daughter to inherit him in turn, the fool). And while the Danish spymaster didn't exactly enjoy the thought of murder, he quickly laid his moral objections aside as I I presented him with a gift of gold. And then, we started plotting regicide.

After the Saint's demise, the new Fool King could do nothing. All of his realms revolted in nothing more than a week or two. England is dotted with tiny few-province realms, excepting the relatively large Lancaster and Northumberland, only the counties northeast of the mouth of the Thames stayed loyal. The Norwegian provinces broke free. All independence wars. And even in the Danish heartland his rule was foiled as the duke/count of Slesvik started a succession war for the throne.

Half of Cornwall is now mine. England is splintered. The remaining Danish settlements has been sieged and taken over and over (resulting in peace for Lancaster, Northumbria and another count so far), and hasn't been able to field any men at all in a long while. I simply hope all revolting realms will be able to win their freedom, as such a fractioned England would be great for my future ambitions. When I return this after noon, I'm going to find out if I can join the Duke of Cornwall's war to ensure their victory at least, so I will only have to face a two-county realm when I want to take the Devon half of the duchy.

This game is great. This game-on-the-game has been awesome. My only regret was that I had to go out of character to do it, but looking back it was totally worth it anyway ;D

I married my son with the princess of Hungary. King of Hungary died, the princess became the queen. This was unexpected. Maybe king's first heir died or something. My son became the steward of his wife. They had a baby. After that, the queen died and thus my grandson became the king.

My son is now the steward of his son.

And still no crusades. It's been at least 50 years. My game is bugged or something?

Re; Crusades earlier. I've noticed successful Crusades basically need all of Christendom to unite and send doomstacks to die of attrition in the desert. The last one, where I made sure I stayed on top on contribution score and gained the Kingdom of Jerusalem, lasted over 12 years and only started moving one way or the other near the end. Everyone and their mother, from the Sultan of Rum to one of the Caliphs was involved on the muslim side, half a dozen kings and the HRE on the Christian side.

This was the second Crusade in my game. The first was the defend the already-existing Kingdom, which, sadly, failed quite spectacularily (the crusaders ignored the Caliphate armies rampaging in Jerusalem while beating other muslims, *sigh*).

But your vassals use their levies to fight each other, which means they are wasting YOUR troops. And your enemy is fighting troops you could have raised as levies...
