Marry into the strongest non-Ilkhanate dynasty in order to get a nice little alliance should they come knocking?
I think already married to the strongest. She can only field 50% more troops than I can, and at her best I'd guess that to be double times my troops. That's still 1/2 to 1/3 the troops the Ilkhanate has.

Request that the Papacy starts a holy war in an attempt to drive them back a little?
How would I do that?

Assassinate, assassinate and never stop assassinating. Should be able to force a couple of succession crises and hopefully collapse it into nom-able chunks..
But how bad would it hurt my reputation to be discovered? My assassination chances on him and his three sons success is pitiful, only reaching ~30% at best, and ~50% chance of being discovered is nasty.

What about using plots to kill the Khan? They probably will have gotten quite a few enemies in their vassals if they are that big, so it might be the best option.
I haven't been able to get any plots to kill anyone in my game. Might be the mod (CK2+), or it might be because my Intrigue sucks hard. Regardless, only one vassal and one member in their court actually dislikes the Khan. Almost everyone else is in double-digit positives.

Make sure to check why people don't want to support your plot. If they almost would have supported you just bribe them.

I'm playing as an italian countess in HRE. -10 for female rulers... This man's world... BAH!

On the bright side, I rebelled and became independent while HRE is busy with other rebellions. I attacked other independent counts around me for years but I realized that takes a long time. I started my plan.

I killed my husband, married the second heir of the ruler of HRE in a MATRILINEAL marriage, killed his first heir, and while HRE is busy with fightining against 12 rebellions at once, I raised an army of mercenaries with the money I saved and pressed the claims of my husband. HRE didn't even sent armies after me. He is now the ruler of HRE and I just have to wait until my character starts popping out babies out of her goddamn baby factory. Take that you man's world!

Now I have to help him with the rebellions though.

I'm about 25 years into my first CK2 game.
I of course chose Harald Hardråde, who started out fighting a futile war of attrition in England for a few years, eventually packing his bags for home and offering white peace. He passed away in bed over two decades later at the age of 75, presumably with a smile on his mouth, while his pregnant 17 year-old wife (and sister of the scottish king) mourned her loss. Not for long though.

After Hardråde's death, his son and designated heir Magnus was elected king of the realm. I hadn't paid proper attention, so this by now middle-aged duke had acquired a number of bad traits, with most skills in the low single digits. Also mostly disliked by the vassals. Also hated by his own wife. Also his oldest son, who had been the ward of Hardråde and shown such promise, had gone ahead and married the closest blood-relative he could find that wasn't a sibling (the daughter of Prince Olaf, his uncle).

So what's a cruel, arbitrary king to do? Time to explore the intrigue screen, which I had ignored throughout most of Hardråde's rule.
First plot: arrange an accident for the daughter-in-law to keep the gene-pool fresh. Unfortunately there was a son before the plot could succeed.
Second plot: arrange an accident for said grandson.
Third plot: do away with the grumpy old queen.
Fourth "plot": have the king marry his ex-stepmother and by now mother of his half-sister. Would be a shame to let her skills go to waste (diplomacy and learning at 20+, the rest except intrigue at 13+).
Not long after the wedding, the king decides to hang out with the steward's wife, so
Fifth plot: have the king's mistress killed.

Then spent a lot of cash improving relations with important nobility and optimizing the demesne. The king might be dumb and fat, but he'd built up a nice fortune.

Reasonably productive first four months of rule I guess.

Edit: sheesh, my english is horrible sometimes.

I can see why Game of Thrones lends itself to this engine so well.  :P

My own game is approaching a fruition point: My character (Eamonn the Wise) is King of Ireland. His wife is Queen of Scotland. Their son, Coenwulf, will inherit both realms. Unfortunately, my wife is also my 1st cousin, and Coenwulf got the derp gene. He's not technically inbred, but he *is* an imbecile (-8 to all stats). His younger brethren would make much better monarchs, but unfortunately I have no options to plot against my own son and heir. Plus, he's managed to breed true and now my grandson, Finn MacCoenwulf Ua Briain (the family switched from Irish to Saxon with Eamonn) has the makings of a fine future king.

Somewhere along the way, I married my other sons off to princesses of the HRE and the Byzantine Empire, and my daughters to the kings of France and Brittany. And currently I and my wife prosecute a joint war against Norway to press our aunt Margaret's claim to the throne. If successful, we could potentially unite the crowns of Scotland, Ireland and Norway within a generation or two.

One thing I am liking is the faster pace of the game. It took WEEKS of play to go through a full CK1 campaign. I'm already up to around 1250 and I've only been playing maybe 10-15 hours on this one.

hmpf. my king managed to have a son and problems were avoided. ( a day I'll reload a previous save, and I won't remarry him, and see what happens).

however, remember the 2 marriages that were matrilinear, even if I didn't mean that?
guess what: one of the sons of such marriages is now duke of ulster.

ulster own all of ireland! only thing missing is the lonely king's province. which would fall quickly in case of war. that is, unless the king invokes out century old alliance. which I should renew as soon as possible.
must protect family!

still, if I think that the duke of ulster could have been one of my own dynasty...

His younger brethren would make much better monarchs, but unfortunately I have no options to plot against my own son and heir.

2 things to check:

1) You can't start a plot if you already have an ambition
2) Even though "see x dead" might not show up in your intrigue/ambitions window, you can still plot against people in your (or other) courts by clicking the little stabby knife icon to the lower left of their portrait. That will reveal any plots you can attempt vs that character (usually killing them).

That's actually a less-talked about feature of CK2+.  They dialed down the whole "plot to assassinate" aspect of gameplay since most people just savescum the assassinate button anyways.  The main benefit is that the NPC's also aren't running around murdering everybody willy-nilly anymore, as they instead chase other ambitions.

Still, it's funny to me that CK2+ doesn't talk about that feature really: it only changes EVERYTHING about the game.

Biggest surprise until now:
I managed to unite Ireland under me and married my brother to the queen of Scotland. But not matrilinear and the have their first son... Gomez. After some years my brother died and the queen married someone new (I think he was some random french guy) and Gomez was somehow send back to my court. He lived there happily for the rest of his life. Then the queen died and her french husband joined her some years later. And now to the surprise. The french didn't had children with the queen, Gomez was the only one with a claim to scotland and BAM I own scotland. Just because a marriage 50 years ago.

I love this game :)

But one question, when will Sword of Islam be released? I cannot find a date...

Soonish, I'm hoping this or next week. I have nothing to base this on except that they I vaguely remember something about the dev diaries "counting down" to the release or something and the last diary was last Friday.

Edit: I just reread the diary and I was wrong, it said that it was the last but that they'll post an ARR this week instead. So I have no real clue whatsoever when it's going to be released.

My king has twice been at risk of dying from passionate sex, both times after the age of 60.

Ok, I'm at home now and can solve the mystery about Gomez.

Gomez grandfather married a basque woman and while the mainline stayed irish one branch becomes basque. His father married the scotish queen and so he brought the basque lifestyle to the scotish court. Together they had 3 children, 2 basque and one scotish. Gomez is one of the basque but the only male and still belonged to my dynasty. After his father died the queen married again and had only one female baby, which is still alive. But this surviving child married out of the scotish dynasty, so her children don't have any claims. Back to Gomez, he died early with just 24 years. And now comes the tricky part: he named his only son Gomez... And this Gomez II had claims of the scotish throne.

I like what the game came up with, when you are not involved. And it took me some time to figure out this story.
