That's too bad. I would have liked to see the ability for a guy with a couple of kingdoms under his belt to go and get himself called emperor. (Presumably he would have to spend a lot of prestige or even have a holy endorsement. But it would be cool if it was at all possible.)

In CK2, you can become emperor. You have 4 levels in the hierarchy (being Emperor, King, Duke and Count. There also are Barons, but that is something else). It is very much possible to become Emperor, even when you are a duke. Only downside is that there are only 2 titles in the base game: Byzantine Emperor and Holy Roman Emperor. You can easily mod in another title if you want.

CK2 will blow CK1 out of the water if you ask me, judging by the LP's and posts made by Secret Master and other on the official forums.

The problem with this is that in those times (and up until the 20th or second half of the 19th century, really) the definition of "empire" was not a vast and/or multi-ethnically realm, but a realm with claims on being the Roman Empire. Hence there can really only be two empires during this period, Eastern and Western Rome, and Eastern Rome is still kicking ay this point and HRE claims the Western title.

The demo is out.

http://www.fileplanet.com/224596/download/Crusader-Kings-II-Demo

It's massaging it's way through my ethernet cable as we speak.

Seriously, when I get my copy of CK2 installed I'm going to remove my hard drive and just rub it all over my body.

Just finished the demo as the duchess of Tuscany, very very very interesting, though ran into some bugs, mostly events with two same choices. Couldn't get a claim on anyone so spent 20 years without any wars, although some muslim guys invaded Sardigna for a moment. The interesting part was educating my daughter and making sure she will get the throne. Also, almost got the Exalted Among Men plot and almost made an invasion to Apulia or whatever that duchy to the south is named, case in point, would have been the Great and the Conqueror.

In my opinion, this game rocks, a few bugs are not an issue, performance was very good. The game kept me interested even though nothing relatively interesting happened through all those 20 years. I will have to search for every penny in my house for it though :D.

I played as all four characters for the whole twenty years and the game is awesome :)
I didn't liked playing as the byzantine heir though, a bit too chaotic.

The demo end date is not 'after 20 years of playing' but in 1086.
So guess who is going to play 200+ years of completely unhistorical CK2 now?
Spoiler: hint (click to show/hide)
(this is probably not going to work somehow but you should always try :P)

Ahh, this demo/game most likely as well is wonderful. I just had a game as the Duke of Bohemia, married my kids off to all the big dynasties, got rich, got prestigious, and then wasted it all when I attempted an ill-advised war against the Duke of Messein for his title, and he called in dozens of allies to his rescue. Though thinking back, I could've probably picked off all those armies one by one and then finished up. I guess I panicked, durr. Also, watch out for your handsome brother if you're playing the Duke, that guy is an asshole.

Also, I've never felt so immersed in a game character before. I picked options in events that weren't necessary the best and most beneficial ones, without even thinking about it if they fit the character and his traits. I worried way too much about my family members and kept checking on my daughter who I married off to the King of France every two seconds.

Since the Duchess of Tuscany was KIND, I always released prisoners and took decisions that were, well, kind, and it was really fun being a kind fat woman in the middle ages.

How do you do this?
I'm liking the game so far, but I think it's bad that I instantly think of things to mod (You need basque culture for a succession law? DISCRIMINATION!)
I was trying to get a norse pagan son as the Duchess of Toscana, but I can't figure out how to send my kid to my husband's court. The game also crashed to desktop so..
Edit: So it's actually quite easy to choose whatever culture/religion you want, because you can have a spouse educate your children, and those of your vassals. You can further work towards this by marrying your courtiers off for even more target culture/religion wives, since one person can only tutor three children at once. My game as King of Poland saw my direct heir be Norse, and one of my vassals be the Jarldom of Greater Poland. Still testing to see what happens when you're inherited by a pagan vassal, but 20 years isn't enough to guarantee death.

I believe this is actually a feature (albeit one that needs polishing). The traits of your character can have an effect on what choices you can make in events. One example is that if your character has the Lustful trait and is confronted with an opportunity to have an affair, you have no choice but to go for it.

Sometimes the gold penalty was different, but you do make sense, since I had zealous and when wanted to buy indulgence there was only one choice.
