Retinues.  Im quite fond of using pure retinues to subjudgate weakened neighbors.  Especially those without allies or with weakened hoildings.  I love to be able to raid a count-neighbor and then end their war in like 7 days.  Your big giant ally cant help you if you cant hold out long enough for them to come.

I've been playing for quite a while and have never bought retinues. Worthwhile then?

Er yeah, they start becoming very useful at superduke level.  As a king I generally don't need my levies except for emergencies.  And imperial retinues can wipe the map fairly rapidly.  Heck, I only ever take skirmish retinues because they're best at storming castles.  And if I've brought enough to win a straight fight, they usually don't take many losses (since they strike hard at first, depleting and demoralizing the enemy before they can close).

Didn't they nerf retinues so they became incredibly expensive? I remember playing after that patch awhile back and just gave up on retinues completely after seeing the insane upkeep costs.

They do cost a lot to maintain after you get past the 5k mark, but smaller retinues can still wipe out most armies while being reasonable to field.

Huge retinues can stomp nearly anything in a fight, especially if you use levies and mercs to fill their weak spots.

The standing costs aren't too bad, but the reinforcement costs can be pretty steep. I think this is to offset the huge advantage of having an army that can steadily reinforce in the field during a war, while levies have to be disbanded and re-raised to take advantage of reinforcements.

Don't know about Karlings, but LW did the GoT mod with Sunset invasion. It's in this thread, if that's what you're talking about.

Yeah, that's the thing that bugged me. It would cost me insane amounts of money to reinforce troops.

meh.  before this recent spurt of playing I remember they were totes cheaper and came in units of 500 a pop.

The king of italy/africa/maurauda had a top retinue of 60k when the aztecs dropped in.  a full half his max army.

I like that theyre more exensive, but theyre still pretty neat.  A full morale army you can mass along borders and siege with?  Loot with?

though tbh its cheaper to use vassal levies to loot and the 'levies raised too long' penalty is mosyly nullifed if you get actual loot.

Regarding efficient conquering: I often declare war on two or three neighboring counties (that are close to one another) so I don't have to waste time dismissing levies and walking them over. This has occasionally led to unpleasant situations. But I stand by the adage: why declare one war when you can declare two?

Offensive pagans (Norse, Tengri, Aztec) actually never get penalties for having levies raised.  They like war sooo much they don't mind paying I guess.

Only while they're unreformed. You also get a wee prestige penalty during peace time (but you'll only want to be at peace at any given moment if you're holding a blot).

So, a new DLC has been confirmed to be coming before christmas. Only thing the devs said about it is that it will not expand the map, so it's not China. Shall we being baseless speculation?
