Urgh, still playing as the Republic of Gotland, and damn it's hard for them to grab a kingdom equivalent title. Republics can't usurp kingdom and empire titles, the uncreated kingdom nearby is Pommerania and it's pagan exclusive, and it have been quite hard to try to grab a claim on Sweden, specially since I try to keep my rulers really high on the Stewardship. Any ideas that don't involve modding?

Yeah, destroying holdings happens every once and a while. But who cares, you still get loot!

I got a question how would one cause a massive Shia empire that spans most of the Middle east and Africa to collapse permanently, they can bring out about forty thousand soldiers to combat a crusade while fight ten different civil wars and four invasions. what tactics would you recommend?

This assumes you can muster 10k+ (20k+ is much better) troops yourself and have enough ships to carry that many. It also sounds like maybe it could be too late to be very effective.

When a Crusade is called for Jerusalem, the Catholic nations send their armies in bits and pieces, and these usually are killed by the doomstack you mentioned. In a 1066 start, if you are Catholic the big power on your side of the Crusade is the HRE. What you want to do as a minor power is distract as many as you can of the Caliphate's armies into marching to distant capitals it owns. Bizerte is a very good spot as they have to march through Libya to get there from Egypt and attrition will hit a big army hard on that march. Keep your ships offshore until you capture the first holding, then put them in the county to be instantly boarded by your army should a larger army appear. After Bizerte is controlled by you through normal sieges, just keep moving down the coast. If you are lucky the HRE will have consolidated and smashed a few of the defender's armies because the Caliphate will want to split enough troops off to destroy your distant forces taking their distant African holdings. Since you've been busy looting capitals and holdings up and down the coast, and possibly destroyed the attrition stricken army sent to attack you, your war score should be high enough to become King of Jerusalem once the HRE captures the duchy itself for you. It's probably not guarenteed by any means but that's how I tend to become King of Jerusalem as Poland.

EDIT: Losing a war causes the Caliphate's leader's decadence score go up significantly, which nearly always causes it to splinter into Duchy-equivalents for at least as long as the war lasts.

Right now in my game as Poland turned Wendish Empire, I'm taking the last few Suomenesko and Slavic religion Counties and Duchies. After that I will have to choose either the Tengri counties or the areas around the Kingdom of Jerusalem to expand into. I think I will choose the area around Jerusalem this time, as last time (pre Old Gods) I expanded into Pagan Russia and met a few hordes who quickly stymied my growth before they expanded from the borders of HRE's Jerusalem to nearly bordering Hungary. The Mongols would have conquered Jerusalem (and probably everyone else not paying them tribute in the form of diplomatic chancellors and bribes), as they still had the no-attrition hordes along with starting to be able to recruit troops of their own. I think the hordes have been modified somehow post Old Gods though, so I guess we'll see.

1. Convert to Shia, join empire, collapse from inside (or join them)
2. Kill their rulers until succession crisis happens, then mass-crusade and such.
3. Wait and hope

Reformed the Norse faith. Everything was fine and dandy until I decided to wage war on a two-province pagan duchy. Goddamn it sucks to be on the receiving end of that pagan attrition bonus. I can muster a 40k+ army and I'm not even sure that would be enough.

My abortive attempt ended with 20 000 dead levies, and with my heir captured and promptly executed.

I think level 4 or 5 in Military Organization tech removes the attrition from pagan provinces.

I've been playing yesterday as Ua Briains again (the save for which I asked for advice). Thanks to some luck, I managed to marry the firstborn son of King of Norway (who ruled over England, mind you) and, as result, born a son, my heir, who was heir to Kingdom of Ireland, Kingdom of Scotland, Kingdom of England and, after electors changed their minds, Kingdom of Norway.

Now here's the deal: after he inherited Scotland he became a King (and took 50% of Ireland along, the bastard). Then my queen died. And now I control Kingdom of Scotland instead of Ireland, which I'm not too happy to see, since Scotland started out with no Crown Authority (just got it to Limited) while Ireland was up to one step short of Maximum.

So, can anyone explain to me how does it work, because it would suck if it would happen again and I'd have to work up the Authority again?

Okay, my game's goal was to mend the schism, but I didn't know you needed the Byzantine Empire to do this.

Now, how do I take over the Byzantine Empire? I need 80% of their provinces which is a pain in the butt, and even with a single 19-year old excommunicated celibate girl on the Throne there is no revolt. For some reason, the Empress won't marry me for political reason. What should I do?

Swear fealty and take over from the inside? Or beat them up and take their lunch money/provinces if you're already a big Empire.

Marry someone in the line of succession, kill off everyone higher up in it?

Well, so no choice but to take them down one duchy at a time? That's going to wreck my reputation with other christian leader. Luckily there ain't that many of them left.

Sow dissent, maybe? Plot to kill the current ruler? Those things worked for me in the past.
