In my current game there's a republic in the baltic sea that operates out of a non-capital city, is that normal ? the mayor is a duke, but the province has a count, with a castle capital, who is a vassal of another duke of that kingdom.

Then on the "is that normal ?" topic, wait, put it in the "wtf that even possible ?" one, I found myself leading troops for one of my vassals with no control over it. He was attacking another vassal following a "change ruler in duchy X" plot, and in his stack of troops was a "army of king Khachik of Armenia(e.g. me)", greyed out and neutral to me. On my character sheet I was also noted as "leading troop in trapezous" .

how could it happen ?

The first isn't very common, but it's not really strange either. A baron does not have to be a vassal to it's de jure count, just like a count does not have to be the vassal to it's de jure duke.

Anyone else gotten event where you offend yourself so you can attempt to throw yourself into the dungeon? I didnt end up in my own dungeon even if the option I picked said that I would be imprisoned. I think that character was possessed so that could explain the oddity of that event but Im still not sure if was a bug.

The one inbetween though... Hjalmar is an imbecile, cruel, gluttonous, wrothful, shy and slothful, giving him the stats 0, 0, 0, 0, 6. I've been trying to kill him off for years, but nothing takes. Even tried to give him a temple only to discover that that trick doesn't work anymore. Maybe I should just give him a duchy now and hope his vassals deal with him quickly enough...

How about a one-county duchy?  He won't get much (the duchy will disinherit him from most else), and you'll keep the added insurance that a third branch can provide once the Plague hits.

Making vassal merchant republics is a great income boost. They do get massive "wrong government" maluses however and will often revolt.

I have noticed increased trade revenue.  Also Patrician Kettilmund is a boss.  I don't know what the hell he's been doing but his dynasty is constantly inheriting the weirdest shit into my realm.  A few years ago the entire remaining non-Norse portion of Scotland (about half of it) just dropped into my lap.  A quick claim war for Galloway to put me over 51% of Scotland and we're now in the running for a Norse Empire of Britannia.  I just need to win Ivar's Grandson's wars for him and I can vassalize Suthreyjar and I'll have complete control of Britain north of Oxford.

Did I mention Kettilmund is possessed?  This guy is a legend, I wish I could carve him a runestone.

You have to watch out about those vassalized republics though. As an Emperor I had one republic decide to take over a large amount of the eastern side of the map, and since I was playing Britannia without any eastern counties I didn't notice he had 3 kingdoms under his belt until he decided to try to be independent. Then he bought all the mercs.

He died, unfortunately, and it was all my fault.  He was also my spymaster, and I sent him to scheme so I could eliminate my heir who was turning out to be a bad apple.  He was murdered by a noble he tried to blackmail.  :C

The Norse Empire of Britannia is unstoppable.  300 longships carrying 17,000 Vikings sailed into the Vatican uncontested and burned it to the ground.

I got a 800% scheme to take the crown, did it, and promptly had my new found kingdom torn apart by civil war. In the course of the next 10 years, I was excommunicated 5 to 6 times, suppressed at least 15 rebellions, gained 3000 gold randomly which was promptly spent on ending the few wars that could not be surrendered to, went into heavy debt, and finally lost the kingdom when three lords rebelled, and my mercenaries got fed up with me being unable to pay. Now I'm down to a tiny plot of land with a crappy income, and crippling debt. God, I love this game.

I just conquered Rome, which in retrospect was dumb because I won't be able to capture and sacrifice the Pope now.

Is there a way to dissolve the Papacy as a non-Catholic?

Papacy (as with every religious head) cannot be dissolved. They'll just bum around with no titles and can still even declare crusades.

Start in 1066 as an Irish count. There you can learn the basics in decent safety.

You can also start as Ostlandet or that big Swedish petty king if you want a wilder start.

You might want to start in the second 1066 date though, or alternative history WILL happen. In my current (third), the first non-utter-fail run, I made the mistake of picking the pre-Stamford date, and now England is under Norse control except for a couple of enclaves. On the other hand, I managed to turn my Petty Kingdom of Munster into a Kingdom of Ireland in the second generation. Also, minor parts of Spain will have a slight Oirish accent, but I'm about to be completely curbstomped there.

For added fun, the war in Spain had an interesting theme going on, since the combatants were my king, [Wossizname] the Wicked, his wife, [Wossername] the Bewitched and [Wossizname] the Devil, ruler of most of the Spain right now.

I did an old gods start. Its currently ~980 and I'm about 75% of the way towards forming russia. I think anyway. You just need to hold a majority of the titles right to form the Russian Empire right?

Either way, I'm carving up the whole area and is very possible that I'll have all of the russian lands before the normal 1066 start. I've already reformed the Slavik faith and a close relative with a 100 opinion of me is the head of the religion.
