Depends on your religion mostly. Pagans want to get the 'become king' ambition and conquer a kingdom asap or they will be overrun by other pagans. Christian will want to get their chancellor to get as many claims by marriage and fabrication, while Muslims just conquer the world and kill their half-brothers.

Harald always seems to get most of Norway (though he only formed the kingdom of sweden in my game), and has only daughters. I wonder if it's kinda rigged or what.

He can get sons, I've had multiple sons with him and the shenanigans that go along with that.  As for taking over norway, he's the strongest initial power and can easily subjugate the others.

It's interesting to see how the game can go differently each time you play. In my current game the vikings have been mostly kicked out of the british isles by a newly formed England. The Magyars never settled into Hungary and eventually ended up being wiped out (while in my first ToG game they formed the Empire of Carpathia).

I started out as the Duke of Achaia and now I see why the ERE has such a hard time expanding, there are constant succession wars raging throughout the empire.

Marrying a younger daughter likely won't work because gavelkind means all will inherit something.
Not if everyone else is dead, he he he.

The statement is that muslims have the coolest parties. Why else are the only ones who get decandent?

That they do. No really, their parties are awesome.

I honestly have no idea. I can only guess is it is a mechanic made to slow down Muslim warring... but I don't think that is how that mechanic works.

It can't be because their countries are so good (even if during this period the Muslims were more technologically advanced and wealthier).

Decadence is a mechanic not to stop Muslims warring all up in the place but rather that Muslim dynasty have a chance to fail. Polygamy means that you'll likely never be in a situation where you have no heirs.
When decadence gets too high there is a decadence revolt which implies tribal nomads and zealous muslims rise up to remove your ineffective rule and management of your dynasty.

Strange Happenings:

I'm playing Jorvik again, this time I took over Northumberland as quickly as possible and with as little damage to my event troops as possible, then did a Prepared Invasion on Mercia.  I'm King of England now and was going to subjugate the Jyllander section of Southern England but fucking Ivar the Boneless got called in and hit me from behind so I had to White Peace it.  Maybe I'll marry into an alliance with Ivar and call him in first next time.

That's not the Strange Happening.  Sigfrid, the next King, died early but thankfully with only one child, Ragnarr (hell yeah), but I was still scared of my new kingdom blowing apart, especially since we've got some Catholic vassals, so I started handing out Duchies like candy.  This led to a Strange Happening in Jorvik.

Is this a bug or is that a decision characters can make?

Not sure what's meant to be odd in the screenshot. If you mean that a merchant republic formed that's not odd at all. If you grant a title to someone who owns a city they convert that holding to a republic, giving a count level republic a coastal duchy will make it a merchant republic.
There are three different types of government. Feudal (castle), republic (city) and theocracy (temple). Whichever of these three holdings a person is given first will determine what government they'll have for life.

Baron -> Count -> Duke -> King -> Emperor
Mayor -> Grand Mayor -> Partriction -> Great Partriction -> Grand Prince
Bishop -> Prince-bishop -> Arch Prince-bishop -> Theocracy -> Theocracy.

Making vassal merchant republics is a great income boost. They do get massive "wrong government" maluses however and will often revolt.

If their capital is coastal it will be a (playable, if you own the DLC) merchant republic. Probably won't do much unless the trade tech at their capital is at level 2 or so though.

Merchant republics and theocracies are great.

Great for raiding. They tend to have either a city or temple as the main holding in their capital county, which means fort level 1-2 instead of 4-5, so it's much easier to get to the juicy stuff inside the crust. I've financed much of my assassination benefit program by looting Rome, Venezia and Genoa every once in a while.

My current game I've just completed the creation of the full Scandinavian Empire, extending beyond the de-jure realm into the baltics and Belo-Ozero, Prussia, East-Anglia and the wealthy county of Brugge. The Ynglinga dynasty has spread even further, with Granada and Portugal being ruled by an odd branch of Sunni Vikings.

I have a major problem now though. Emperor Thorgil I the great is nearing his 60th birthday and it's time to prepare for succession. He has three sons. The eldest, Thorgil, is an excellent heir to the dragon throne who has been leading armies most of his adult life. The youngest, Folki, is also a capable noble and well-suited to receive a kingdom.

The one inbetween though... Hjalmar is an imbecile, cruel, gluttonous, wrothful, shy and slothful, giving him the stats 0, 0, 0, 0, 6. I've been trying to kill him off for years, but nothing takes. Even tried to give him a temple only to discover that that trick doesn't work anymore. Maybe I should just give him a duchy now and hope his vassals deal with him quickly enough...
