I'm totally cool with the other forms of "losing," losing is fun after all.  Like, if there was a succession crisis and my kingdom broke into a bunch of petty states, that'd be fine.  I'd have fun continuing in the shadow of my old kingdom and seeing how things take shape.  But to have the game basically tell me "Well, you're doing great, but your invisible fertility stat is low and you didn't have much luck last generation either, so you can play for twenty more years and then go fuck yourself, game's over."

Load to before the death and pick a Duke or a potential-filled count of your kingdom, to take the country [which will go into chaos since your leader has no heir] to glory? Every proper empire purges dynasties every once in a while, anyway.

That's probably what I'll do, once I've forgiven the game.

Or cheat. The command is "Pollinate [ID of mother] [ID of father]".

It's a cheat I'm well aquaintanced with, as I often get attached to other dynasties (old allies, nice shields or names, or such) and the AI couldn't keep it's dynasty alive if it's life depended on it.

Ugh.  Does anyone know why  my soldiers suck so much?  I just went into a battle with double their numbers, was winning, and then suddenly my morale just vanished and I left with like a third of my troops.

Could be a lot of things. Terrain, generals (and their tactics), tech level and the troops composition all can make a significant difference in a battle.

I've lost battles where I had nearly a 10k troop advantage because of horse archers.

The reason such a big chunk of your troops disappeared at once was most likely that one of your flanks were routed, though. All armies are made up if three parts (as long as they have enough levies - need at least one individual levy per part): center, and two flanks. When you battle, each part fights it's equivalent to begin with and have to defeat or route them before they can attack any other part.

Awesome deal on Steam: All DLCs except the newest (aka no Old Gods) for $13.  Considering the major ones sell for ten dollars each, its quite a deal.  And here I was trying to decide which of the older ones to purchase, when this sale appeared!  All hail Paradox!

I can't stay mad at this game.  This time I'm trying something a little harder than Ostlandet (which I've been informed means Cheese Land.  Perhaps they meant Østlandet?).

I went with Vestisland this time.  It's been interesting.  You gotta play under the radar, the first time I made a super kickass guy with like 20 martial in the ruler designer and had an 800-strong Cheeseman army on my beach within a month because he wanted me as his marshal.

So I have to play with the default ruler, which means we start out in a deadlock.  I spent the first like ten years constantly raiding Ireland and using the money to improve my one tiny holding until I had a sizable troop lead over him.  Then I waited for him to send his levy on a raiding trip and sent my dudes over real quick on a boat to besiege his capital and secure the mountain defense bonus before he got back.  Now I'm the Petty King of Iceland and I'm waiting for Haraldr Yngling, who's taken over most of Norway as usual, to take me over.  He has only daughters so this could be an interesting opportunity for some shenanigans.

Except for some reason Haraldr saw through my extremely transparent attempt to slip in and put my dynasty on the throne, and rejected the offer due to "political concerns."  Anyone know a clever way around this?

Has anyone tried populating a region with dwarves? That sounds stupidly interesting.

My friend failed to implement the strict eugenic projects I design in one of his Muslim games and ended up with dynasty comprised mostly out of dwarfs.

You can try doing a matrilineal betrothing, and then offer a normal marriage when they come of age, they'll accept. It's a bit gamey, but it works.

Mary a younger daughter, then kill your way up the line of succession. Or wait until the older daughter inherits and start a war for your wife's claim at an opportune moment. Or, depending on if your wife's claim is inheritable or not, wait until your children come of age and start a war for their claims.

Marrying a younger daughter likely won't work because gavelkind means all will inherit something.

Ah, right. But doesn't they get claims on higher titles anyway? I'm not too experienced with gavelkind, I always try to change to elective as soon as possible. Don't have Old Gods either so no forced gavelkind for me!

You could marry a daughter and then form/join a faction to place her on the throne, if you wanted. It involves going to war, however. This is exactly how I usurped Haraldr's throne.

Ugh. I just had to reload a save game because I wasn't paying attention and married my son and heir to my dynasty off matrilineally. Some advice; when you arrange a betrothal with the AI they will send you a marriage proposal when the couple are of age with a request that is different from your betrothal arrangements if it benefits them. It's easy to miss if you're like me and skim most pop ups.

So, just bought CKII for a steal at 20 euro with all the DLC. However, I'm slightly confused as to what I should be doing when I start out. What's the first things I should be doing apart from marrying off my ruler?
