Didn't get Old Gods yet but I Abyssinia seems to be in a better position now. Its not the hopeless situation it was before ad Nubia has its own de jure territory. Sennar is it's own duchy now. Not sure how it looks at the earlier start.

Ireland is literally just waiting to be conquered in a single campaign, it's a bit silly. You can declare conquest on all but 2 provinces and probably win so long as you have > ~5k armies.

Ireland is affectionately known as "Newbie Island" for a reason. It is by far the easiest place to try things out on.

The Viking Age was a clear turning point in Ireland's history but they're still rather ahistorically weak. Right now they're either a free source of loot or land. 

I'm convinced that Paradox doesn't play test any of the feature they add. Who in their right minds greenlit the "I want to be king" ambition and free costal conquest for the Norse.

Thinking about purchasing this since it's on sale for $10 and it sort of looks like it's in the direction of my alley.  Pros and cons?  Do you think it'll be slashed at the summer sale?

It honestly might be worth splashing out the extra ten dollars for the 20 dollar collection which includes all the major DLC's except the new Old Gods DLC (that's Sword of Islam, Legacy of Rome, The Republic, and a bunch of cosmetic DLC's I don't think anyone really cares about).
They really add a lot to the gameplay, and while I suspect there will be a summer sale for this, it's not going to be the 75% off you can get right now.

I also suspect that the old gods DLC will be on sale for $7 or something during the summer (versus the full $15 for it right now).

Not that this game is bad, but it REALLY wasn't made for me and I should have known better.

I find paradox games to get exponentially more fun the more you discover about the game. Try learning more about how it all works and it might give you your money in play time.

Was it via plotting? They can plot to take over trade posts adjacent to their own.

I don't think so, it was 3 trade post at a time. The message was something like "To better manage the realm, we decided to take over the operation of some fo your trade post" and "To help the Grimaldi family, we've decided to transfer some of your trade posts to them."
