Some basic information on battle and generals.

Generals are assigned to a flank in an army, there are three flanks in an army. Generals can be attached to a flank of any size but an army with a low number of troops will default to a single flank. When you have an army selected just click on the "No character" tab to appoint a general. This will bring up a list of the characters, their martial skill and finally their traits.

A battle occurs of three stages: skirmish, melee and chase. Different units are better at different phases. Horse archers and archers do the most damage in skirmish. Heavy infantry, pikemen and heavy cavalry do the most damage in melee. Light cavalry do massive amounts of damage in chase. Light infantry don't really excel in any area and are mostly a shock force. Tactics are used in each phase and will determine how effective each class of soldier will perform.
Generals are in charge of your units tactics and will determine what tactic they use. Generals with higher martial skills will use smarter tactics. The composition of your army will also favour certain tactics. Traits also stack the chance of a particular tactic being used. This is why it's a good idea to try and stack your army with a particular kind of unit and a leader with tactics that favour that unit class so that positive tactics for that class are chosen instead of neutral or bad tactics.

Do note that some people believe that light cavalry will harm your army since LC class tactics have very little benefits to the other classes. They're also hopeless in all phases outside of chase and since chase is only at the end of a battle they'll very rarely break-even in kills. I try to avoid any culture that has LC retinues since they're so ineffective.

Generally it's best to get generals that have the best traits for your army rather than just plain martial skill. Martial skill doesn't have all that massive effect on combat.
I believe you need medium crown authority to be able to appoint generals that are outside of your direct court. I could be wrong about that since I don't play with vanilla crown laws anymore.

Martial skill does make your traits more effective and minimizes or even eliminates the down side of traits.  So the idea general has lopsided traits who's plusses and minuses dont cancel out and has martial above 15 or so where the negatives disappear.

With generals being mentioned, keep a close world eye on children outside of your realm. Sometimes, there is a lowly, sick peasant with 5's across the board, and his insane, imbecile wife. Both hating their liege, or having claims...
..and their 25 martial skill son, that isn't even aged yet.

With some micro, your court will look at 20 skill as 'low'.

Just FYI, and probably completely off topic, the MOD Western Hemisphere allows you to play in North and South America. I used one of the two MODs that allow you to transfer it to EU3 and it worked! This is pre-Old Gods release though. You never know if it'll work after that. Sorry for not throwing in links! :D

I remember looking at that and wondering why anyone would ever play it. All you're doing is switching land masses. I do like that they didn't go with ugly modern square borders though, I can't stand those.

My favorite mod is the one that puts the New World onto the map..... as Westeros. What happened was for April Fools Day the GOT team claimed they had finally added Essos, but instead because it was April 1st, they just instead hastily pasted Europe from vanilla onto the map. Sadly it was barely functional, and tended to CTD within a few years. So naturally someone took it and made it a functional mod. I imagine William the Conqueror is close enough to Aegon to count anyway.

I'd love a mod that expands the map a bit and adds in some landmasses from fantasy/mythology to the 'real world'. Invasion of atlantis anyone?

The Old Gods (pagans finally) is up for preorder. Most expensive expansion yet at $15. Paradox just keeps upping the price of expansions by $5.

DLCs are a great way of getting people pay a lot more than games than they think they are.

I mean, free patches are irrelevant if I'd buy expansions with the same patches, but not free, anyways :/

I bought the game and every single DLC for almost no money during the Amazon sale. I think it was something stupid like $5 for the entire collection.

There's a Touhou mod. And a MLP one as well iirc.

Though, admittedly, the Touhou mod takes Hungary I think and basically clones it to make Gensokyo. Still waiting for that mod to get updated...
