Hahaha, I formed a vassal republic and one of the patriarchs died without a heir and another is celibate with a celibate wife.

Ok, picking this up again, and I had a few questions:
1. Standing armies (retinues?). How do I get these? Do I have to hit a certain military tech?
2. Plots and people: How do I sway people to join my plots, even people who like me tend to no want to help due to the 2 base reluctance.


1: First you need the expansion that the retinues are part of. Without it the screen for them will be there, but unusable. After you got that retinues are based on how many people you can raise. A percentage of that (Based on certain techs) goes into your retinue limit that you can tend spend on retinues.

2: Bribery. I find that if people like me, and don't like the person I am plotting against, a bribe will almost always be enough to get them into my plot. If Bribery is not enough (and with enough practice you should be able to tell at a glance if a bribe will tip them over) I normally find it not worth the hassle to do other things. But if they are your vassal then something like giving them court positions or land may work.

Ah, that explains the retinue thing, don't have that expansion yet, i thought maybe it was lumped in with the patch like most other features. Oh well.
Also, by bribery do you just mean sending a monetary gift? I assume so, in which case, I must've tried it on someone too far from tipping when I did, I'll try it again tonight.

At least from what I recall of a studio like Creative Assembly, the bug-fixing team is usually separate from a DLC-making team. Usually.

And as for mods, the reason Paradox probably doesn't take much from them is that while some people may love the various bugfixes used in some, they may not be in line with what Paradox thinks is ideal.

The Republic lured me back to playing again.

It definitely seems a bit too easy to get ahead so far. Getting a casus belli should be harder to make expansion a bit more difficult.

Is there a way to bring your republic up a notch? I started playing with Gotland and it is at the level of the Duchy - yet other republics seem be at the King (Most Serene Republic) level (Pisa, Genoa, etc).

CA is also roughly 10 times larger than PDS. I highly doubt they have two "teams" working on CK2.

Yah, it sounds like minecraft with content, you have obviously missed the point, people dont like content, they like different coloured blocks.
Seems to work fine with my copy. As soon as I loaded the human caravan came by and the world burst into fire.

Playing as a random person every time you die sounds a lot more fun than it actually is.
I was basically playing opm-count everytime. Stuck doing the same invest > claim > invest more > die routine every life >.<. That game ended prematurely, although I might try it again sometime and just roll 3 characters each time and choose between those or something.

Next game: Doge of Pisa, without investing money in the election campaign. Gotta do it with either plots or luck.

I'd do random kings and equivalent (large dukes, counts in areas like Finland or Ireland where you can do stuff, etc) rather than random anybodies.

I'd forgotten how awesome this game is.

Just threw on the new CK2+ mod and gave the Shattered World overhaul a whirl. Having a blast so far. It's really interesting watching everyone try to hold onto their little piece of land while desperately taking others' stuff. The strong get stronger, but when they're weak from fighting they tend to get conquered back really quick (Which is how I've managed to grow my land into two whole duchies).

The stories that naturally come up out of the game are also awesome. I had a mayor in an unstable region die of natural causes recently. He was replaced by the new mayor, who was killed by a mob the very next day. I had to laugh, and then felt bad for the guy.

The best natural story so far is the one of my spy master, though. He was off stealing technology in foreign lands and got arrested. He was getting on in his years, and had given my little duchy lots of breakthroughs, so I decided to lay down the 10 gold to free him so he could have a happy ending rather than rot in a dungeon. He returns home, and a few days later his wife dies. My first thought was, "Wow, I'm glad he got home in time to say goodbye." I eventually gave him control of a county once my demesne started getting too large, he remarried, and now his children rule in his stead. The dude lived a good ten years or so after I got him out of jail, too.

So freaking awesome.

Yeah, Shattered World is certainly interesting.

I mean, I've got a Kingdom of Cornwall based in northern Wales that also controls Aquitaine and more that England had in real life. How did that happen? I have no flipping clue. I think they've also been Cathar before in the past.

Meanwhile I'm sitting in Verona raging over how my heir inheriting a Gavelkind succession duchy then inheriting mine made Verona Gavelkind. I'm also raging over how half my vassals hate me. I'm almost tempted to save edit this because I didn't know this would happen.

Does anyone else have problems with betrothals?  Mine rarely turn into marriages, unless I break the betrothal and Arrange Marriage (now with an opinion penalty for breaking the betrothal).  I basically only use betrothals to 'reserve' super-children now.   Was a little disappointing to inherit a kingdom, finally hand some land to my patient 40 year old brother, only to find he didn't have a single child yet with his now 40 year old betrothed 'wife'.

Eh, I don't normally have issues with them. Are you perhaps aiming too high?

What I normally do is first train all my daughters under my best spies and give them super high intrigue. Then I arrange matrillineal marriages with as many young barons and counts as possible. Maybe princes too, but most of the princes you can normally get either don't inherit any land or are too high up the succession line. I also always make sure never to accept their offer when the time comes, as it's always regular marriage. In the rare chance there aren't any landholders willing to marry matrilineally, then I still find a random guy with good stats to marry them off to. Because they will still have high intrigue and there's a small chance their children of my bloodline will go places.

This is how I allow whatever family I'm playing to spread across the world like a plague. Their high intrigue means they almost always get their children into better ranks etc.

For guys, I always try looking for baronesses, duchesses, etc. A bit more rare, and generally easier to get while they are children since they won't be married off yet. Princes and princesses are overrated, they don't give you anything important.

Also, I almost never marry my ruler to big name players. Since very rarely will you find them with good stats and traits like genius. I think good breeding is much better than a temporary alliance or a prestige boost.

Can't you just offer marriage to your betrothed once both are of age?
