As a noble, can I nurture a republic vassal and help him take over the trade routes?

I think so. I do know that if you as, say Venice, create a duchy level republic on the coast, it will just be a regular one.

The Republic AI seems to be wy better at playing CKii than the feudal one. Genoa is busy getting Iberia, Pisa is on it's way to annex North Africa, and Venice is losing war after war under my great leadership.

I would think the Republic AI does better because it gets so much money and can hire mercs, instead of having to rely on upgrading castles and towns and such to get bigger and bigger levies. Mercs are just way, way, WAY better for a long time.

Merchant republics can't exist under other merchant republics, but they can exist under Feudal Lords.

Also, wow. I'm struggling to just get off the ground in my current game. How do you guys make so much money? Should I just do nothing but build trade posts?

So it seems to me that having at least one merchant republic under you is wise as a feudal lord. Don't see any downside. Don't have the expansion yet (will wait for a sale of some sort), but I did notice the mercs went from 7k as the biggest to 20k (!) as the biggest. Wow. Crazy times.

Bought this, but haven't had time to try it out. Is there enough to do as a patrician when you are out of office? How are the vendettas between the families?

Just found a BIG downside to having a republic as a vassal: embargo wars. Just had the HRE and Poland declare war to embargo my vassal republic. Had to pay 1,200 to peace out HRE and 800 to peace out Poland (could have tackled Poland, but was involved in another war). No loss of prestige or anything, but quite annoying.

On the other hand, the Grand Mayor just did gift me 2600 gold or so... so, balances out?

Keeping up to date - CK2 is now available for Ubuntu through Steam, but they still have major graphic issues. Can't wait to have it eventually working!

How are the vendettas between the families?

Random event chains. Sometimes the text is amusing, but I wish they were a bit more fleshed out. I should declare vendetta on your family after you had my last patrician assassinated, not when a random event about a party pops up.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Yeah, that plot to take over a trade post is pretty powerful, and the AI isn't very good about expanding in the first place. Only one family had more than one when I initially took them over, and since the only two more have been built (in Denmark, obviously I took those over too). Might be because I am the doge, but if I wasn't I'd just save money until I can buy mercs (and hopefully when they can't buy enough mercs to beat me, works better in MP because people actually spend money if they are human) and go around conquering all of them. (Of course, humans are more likely to be able to competently retaliate afterwards too.)

You missed the large negative relationship modifier between everyone in each dynasty, so they're probably going to try and kill you(r family) more often once you are in a feud, along with all the other things the AI does. I agree that feuds just starting via random event isn't that interesting, I reckon having the option to start one when a plot against your family by another family or when war is declared would be a better way to handle it, but that has its own issues.

Some impressions of the republic so far.

It's easy to stay in power if you keep a decent nest egg and use intrigue to get rid of any potential threats.
I hate agantic seniority. There's no way to groom your heir and unless you start kinslaying you're likely going to be stuck with an old useless bastard.
Gotland is insanely easy. There's no competition so trade is effortless. You can easily push towards the British Isles and take some Irish lands if you need to expand rapidly.
Republican expansion is very opportunistic. As Venice it's best to wait until a HRE revolt so you can gobble up tons of towns and counties with ease.
Muslim empires still have to deal with decadence, multiple wives and sons taking cuts of the business. They seem to be the most fun to play so far due to just how chaotic they get.
Vendettas aren't all that impressive. It's only a -70 relationship hit so it can still be trivial to get 100 relations. There's not quite enough events for vendettas.
It seems embargo wars are the biggest threat to republics. Building trade posts in big kingdoms/empires can be a double-edged-sword.
Bishoprics can be exploited to stem your dynasty's population growth.
You seem to be able to make a republic vassal from your own dynasty. Doesn't appear to be much negative to keep one around especially since you can tame them with embargoes if they get uppity.
Republics seem to trend towards being rather easy to play, a few patches or mods slowing down expansion or income could fix this however.

Republic is pretty fun. I didn't think a female could become Doge, but it seems you can actually. I think I went about 30 years before I realized you could upgrade your House, and THAT looks awesome. However, judging by the laws... I can't really play a proper game of Republic as women can't inherit, and I always like to try and run all-female run dynasties. I can just keep age cheating, but my test game ended when a random event got me killed by assassins. Nothing I can do about that.

Actually they will try to kill you even if they outright like you.

Everyone in this game is often such a rampant backstabber that being uttarly irrationally paranoid is a benefit.

I learned my lesson when my highly beloved brother killed my son and then tried to kill my second son all so his own son would become king.
