3: An AI that doesn't act like a person but isn't stumped by simple problems.

Strange, Alex on Starfarer seems to be fixing a majority of the simple problems the AI has problems with and that's in a game which seems to have a whole lot more complex problems. He doesn't seem to be having much problems doing so either.

CKII, doesn't have any excuses for the mistakes made. The problems are stupidly simple to fix: Facing attrition and no dangerous army in sight? Make the AI split the army. Facing multiple smaller armies that you don't need your entire army combined to defeat and you don't have time to march that stack to kill all of them? Make the AI split up it's army. Small army next to an unoccupied large army as bait? Have the AI count both armies as one.

Yeah... AI basically gave me Leon tonight.

Declared a holy war to retake it. They'd taken it a few years back with a 20,000 troop stack, mostly from allies.

This time around I not only had Holy Orders to draw upon, but the leader of the Emirate of Leon had just died, leaving the whole shebang to a much less popular youngster. This ended up losing all of their Allies except a few small ones.

It was a tough war, but I started with deep coffers and the Pope chipped in a couple of times because he decided he liked the cut of my jib... or blade...

It took years of dancing around, but because the AI focused almost entirely on Leon, I was able to pop an army back behind their lines and take some of their rear area. I'd hop back up to take the Leon provinces whenever they were all back in enemy hands and to attack any reasonably large but vulnerable armies in my way. Started with an army of 12,000. That got chopped down to about 8,000. I brought a second holy order in. After a while that even got chopped down again. Then a pulled in a few mercenary troops as my troop numbers dwindled. Allies helped a bit, especially a very convenient marriage ceremony to Brittany followed by their dowry of an few thousand troop reinforcement.

Still, I never had a major defeat that entire war, and the AI, had it only stopped focusing on Leon and actually tried to regroup its troops into one stack, probably could have weakened me severely and I would have eventually run out of money. (I started with 800 gold, pope chipped in 400 over the course of the war, and I gained probably between 4 and 500 from dying familyless court members. I ended with about 200 gold.) If it had also tried to retake some of its core provinces I'd probably have never been able to push the war score up to 100% too. I'm happy with the way it turned out, but had the AI been smarter, it wouldn't have turned out that way.

Now, for my next problem... I've got a reasonably old Queen. (56) Whose only heir is a reasonably old half sister (also 56). She also has no living heirs... both have been married since their early 20s, but only the half sister had a single son who died at the age of 2.

Any ideas on how to get some heirs in there? I believe if they both die it passes onto a cousin that's a princess of France of something... but I don't believe they're actually in my dynasty.

It was just bad luck that my previous king had only girls and ended up dying at 80, leaving me in control of a 46 year old childless Queen when he died.

Yep, pretty much this.  You were supposed to matrilinearly marry those daughters to broaden the dynasty tree.  Basically you should always matrilinearly marry your daughters from the first two to three generations to quickly build your dynasty to a self-sustaining size.  Yeah, you'll be missing out on alliances for the first 50 years of the game, but there's plenty of eligible strapping bastards and lowborns ready to crank out some male-grandchildren for you.

Now you're officially doomed short of cheating.  (Hence the "pollinate" references.)  If you're really attached to your current gameworld, you could also save the game and load a different character.  Otherwise, you're headed towards a game-over screen.

I actually did do that. I had 4 daughters reach the age of marriage. 3 I married off matrilineally. Of those three, one died due to plots. (They hated each other because half of them were bastards.) One never had any children and one only had one son that died at 2.

The one I didn't marry off matrilineally, the youngest, was a last ditch effort to get that alliance. Oh well... Maybe it's time I do some of the sneaky and just try killing husbands like crazy.

Just bad luck I guess... or I suck. Either way I'll continue to try to dig myself out of this.

You basically want to screw everyone right from the start. Unlike Islamic factions you don't really get any penalties from shittonnes of children. Any unlanded sons can be married off to the countless numbers of countesses, baronesses, etc. You get claims and free land everywhere, especially with strategic assassination later on.

Then like others mentioned, matrilinearly marry off every single daughter to everybody, preferably in influential foreign courts. Doesn't even matter if it's an unlanded courtier, since their children will remain there unless circumstances change and if your luck is good those children could get titles or positions to help you.

After about 50 years of doing this (one leader's lifetime), your dynasty should basically be self sufficient and also humongous.

War is for pussies. Real kings conquer through their groin.

I have played the game for hundreds of hours without ever matrimarrying my daughters (they screw up the family tree) and never ran out of male dynasty members. While it will indeed give you more kinsmen, it is never actually necessary unless you have extremely bad luck in the first 20 years or so.

Okay, I saved my dynasty... I had completely forgotten about Aragon... sitting over there, King of his own single county... BUT... also a part of my Dynasty.

I converted all my Kingdoms over to Seniority succession which would normally have given it to Navarra, which wouldn't have been good for various reasons(Including some potentially dangerous marriages they'd done with France.), but I managed to make sure he died before I did, carefully placing Galicia, Castille, Leon and Aragon all under one crown. AND to boot, That king has a good number of  young sons, so once I take care of a single annoying Duke, I can covert everything back over to primogeniture or gavelkind and I'll be sitting pretty.

Spain is under new management.
