Oh, right. It's pretty much what I wrote. The guy had it in his inventory on day 1 (the Viking age start). I've never had much experience with artefacts (apart from the +2 axe I keep getting for some reason), so I don't know how rare that is to happen.
Dyre the Stranger is quite a Marty Stu character of a Viking, so the RNG might be weighted for him to sometimes have it. Maybe.

Really? My last game was as Rurik and I don't remember having any starting artifact. In fact I don't remember ever having starting artifacts and I pretty much play exclusively pagan.

One specific pagan will though.  I know the Romuvan axe is in Curonia and the Slavic one is in Poland.  The axe grants a considerable disposition boost, a modest martial skill boost, and possibly a few other things.

I think if anything, it must be randomly placed in one country of the appropriate religious group, since that was the only time ever Dyre had it (I start as him quite often).

I usually have to raid priests to snag Mjolnir when I go Norse, it frequently winds up in the hands of one of the Germanic holy sites priests in my games.

Those artifacts are great for keeping vassals in line.

Sacrifice an eye, wield and axe, and make everyone a keeper of the horse while you bed their daughters.

is there a reason not to join the Hel cult as an independent Norse ruler? I've not had any real downsides and the ability to make babies into life juice and cure wounds at high ranks is fab. I had a guy with 25 martial from all the buffs, up from like 16, who was commanding 7000 troops in ad 870 in sweden as a petty king
