Terrible DRM. Typical console-leftovers port. I think that sums up my experience thus far. So much for a new Populous.

I'm not through yet, but so far it's not a new Populous. It's fun and pretty - and the little myths set the mood perfectly.

I won't pass judgement until I've finished, though.

I just finished. Pretty much the same complaints that have already been voiced, enjoyable engine, though if a bit difficult to control.

That control scheme?  Eh, I'm not bothered by click/hold, but the console-style cursor control (the cursor moves in relationship to the center of the screen, instead of the mouse movement) just kills it for me.
You can change that in the settings.

And the PC version just took a hammering on Rock Paper Shotgun ... Oh dear.

Buy, play, get your money back. That way you can see all the problems for yourself.

You can change that in the settings.
No, sir.
You can make it so it doesn't scroll the camera too, but it's still playing the mouse like an analog stick.
And you can't scroll the camera separately from the cursor at all, so that option is pretty useless.

Lame. And I was really hoping they'd do something intelligent with this game. Faint hope, of course, but it was there.

Oh, well. Maybe the engine will get licensed out to some other companies who can do something cool with it without Ubisoft ruining everything.

Try using your keyboard. WASD + QE for rotation, worked last I checked.

I'm actually really enjoying it, minus the shitty DRM-Ware. Ubisoft has gone senile =/ Sort of a 3D falling sand game, though I wish it weren't so heightmap oriented, or at least that it used intersecting volume heightmaps so that I could build water pipes with lava. Maybe next game. Had fun diverting a river into a volcano on the first map with lava, and making huge swamps with the mud-springs + flooding the whole desert map like mad. I'm surprised more people here didn't like it, but I guess more was expected on the tribe side of things. As far as I'm concerned, the villagers are just there to stand around looking confused for my amusement after a tsunami leaves them stranded in awkward places.

That's primarily the reason I'm not going to get it except on a big sale. The funnest part of the game sounds like the dick-around portion of Populous, a "buildy" version of clicking the flood button and watching all your followers drown. I'd totally waste a day terraforming a landscape if there was a larger point to it, or at least a larger game for that landscape to be situated in.

So in the end I think everyone's original verdict on this was correct. It's a tech demo with enough game there to justify a price tag. Personally, I await whatever game licenses this engine and delivers most of the stuff it lacks.

I just remapped camera controls to WASD and never looked back. I'm having a great time with the game so far. The only real griped I have is that the bodies of villagers have an odd habit of disappearing as I watch them, leaving just a floating head to follow, and the animals randomly vanish entirely. Still, I'm impressed by how pretty the game is. I think it's worth the $15 I paid for it, but probably not worth much more than that. Definitely seems like something most folks should pick up once it goes on sale and another round or two of patched iron out the remaining issues.

QE rotates, yes.
The thing is, though, that WASD moves the cursor too.

Dammit, game industry. stop making fun-looking things into crappy console ports and then adding useless DRM.

Minecraft UI is very simple. There's only so many ways you can implement "simple" without copying something. We also gonna complain that it uses WASD?

Been putting in some hours on this, really enjoyable if you like screwing around in sandbox games. The puzzle aspect (populous'ish) is there, but I feel (and that just might be the old man in me, GET OFF MY LAWN!) hasn't been reached yet for sure. (I still got lot's of lvls to try though.)

So I even haven't come close to finishing it (and also haven't experienced any problems with graphics or controls so far) -- but I might have not put in the hours yet that it gets on my nerves.

Very enjoyable so far, But I would point to a demo here first before buying... dunno if one is out though. I bought it way to soon...( like always ). The game has a tech-demo feel to it. One can see they put in some time and effort, something just feels off.

If it ever goes on a sale, it's a safe bet if you wanna fool around throwing around the 4 elements. ;) Not bad at all, if one can spare the $$$ and not worry about it, it's safe. If one is counting their pennies, try a demo first.
