Yeah basic DRM removes what I call "Casual Piracy". Some games didn't have this (like Tribes and one Unreal Tournament... MIND YOU in Unreal Tournament's case it probably boosted sales. Though from what I hear it didn't help Tribes)

After that it starts to affect Resale more then Piracy

Hmmm I'm a pretty new guy to Steam, but if it's on steam, do they remove the DRM?

And spore was counted at 1,700,000 downloads from mainstream pirate sites at the end of 2008, the year it was created. Not counting all the shared cracked versions and smaller unknown pirate sites, that is a freaking huge number. I couldn't find how many copies were sold by the end of 2008 but I'm sure after everyone raged at how horrible everything was it didn't help sales.

Steam IS the DRM.
But at least steam allows me to play offline, has a chat thing, groups, store and isn't a resource hog to my machine.

I'll buy this game despite DRM, simply because it looks to be a brilliant game. I've been frustrated with Spore once in a while, but otherwise I rarely see any issues with DRM. Mind you, I haven't tried too many of Ubisoft's games on the PC, so this might be particularly painful for me.

If I'm reading that right, you have a console.  Why not buy it on that and avoid the DRM?

Mods?

Anyway, does that mean I won't have to deal with anything other then playing the game if I buy it on Steam?

SO ABOUT THAT GAME

This just looks absolutely amazing, especially since it has a real tribal feel to its design, which is something you don't see too often considering that it was the first social structure of our species. I shall certainly be getting it.

It's like Populous and Black&White 1 had a baby and that baby wasn't a creature, which is totally fine.

B&W 2 got so damn tedious and was quite inferior to 1. From Dust looks like it'll be very enjoyable and I want more offered than what I've seen so far. Hopefully it's built on and not completely altered into something borderline unplayable in sequels.

Steam allows 3rd party DRM, so no.

Even if it doesn't get a sequel, thats one heck of an engine they've made there!

Problem is, it doesnt look that fun, it just looks amazing to play with the land forms. From what I can see, the gameplay seems to be some sort of puzzle like situation where you gotta get your tribe from A to B using the tools you have available to shape land or water or whatever. That might be just one mode and theres more to see, but with the price they are offering, I wont keep my hopes up for anything nearly as deep as Populous of B&W.

Now are you saying that pirates who didn't buy the game wouldn't of bought it anyway because of the DRM, or because the game is bad? Big difference.

Pirating goes up with DRM. Spore, with one of the DRMs that was considered in court to be a rootkit (I have no idea how they weren't sued for using it) had the highest pirate rating ever.

Sad thing is they probably keep doing this because they make more money off the DRMs that prevent resale then the money they lose to potential buyers. Spore even forced multiple people to rebuy the game.

I don't even think resales are all that high. It's odd, because they're probably losing more customers to piracy with DRM than they're making back off the resales.
