This looked interesting and a probable, price dependent buy but now I'm only going to pirate it even if they announce that they cut out the fluid/terrain system like with spore if only to show my disgust with their practices.

(Honestly, I've never been in a situation where I said "Fuckin' a, I wish I could play this game but the DRM is too obtrusive."  It's not a big deal for me)

I was in this situation recently with the copy of Spore I bought on release. It won't let me install unless I call their customer support. What will that be like when support for Spore ends? I ended up not calling because the game isn't worth the effort.

Just download the TED talk on Spore and be amazed! Then hope someone actually makes that game before you die.

I can't knock Spore now. I forgot my password to my BC2 account and couldn't recover it, and by using my Spore CD-key, EA CS was able to verify that I owned BC2 (despite my Steam ownership proof and ownership of keys), and I was able to get my shit back. So yay. Spore was good for something.

It had nothing to do with the millions spent on the Spore network for content sharing and the fact user creations were tied to a robust account. Not at all.

You're not showing them shit though.  The only way anything will actually change is if no one touches games with the DRM.

That'll never happen though.  We get "I hate this game, I'll play it for free" and "I'm boycotting this game and by boycotting I mean joining a steamgroup and then buying it on release day."  That won't change anything.

The frustrating thing is the game doesn't deserve to fail and the people who made it don't deserve to fail.

Ubisoft, and Ubisoft alone, should be taking the fall for this, but any backlash against the product hits people and things that didn't deserve or earn that.

We are a lost drop of water in the bucket of sales for games like this. Assassin's Creed et. al has done great based solely on the game's performance. People's irritation with the DRM in general hasn't been enough to stop Ubi from doing it. I don't see that FD will be any different. I own AC2. I'm already subject to the DRM. PD isn't the kind of game I see myself needing to play at a moments notice, when I'm sitting around with no internet. It's also cheap. So, I don't think the game is any real danger of suffering.

Wouldn't any otherwise well meaning customers pirating a game because of DRM send the same message as not buying it at all? It might even make it clearer that the game was well received besides the DRM. Simply not buying might lead them to think the game was poor DRM and all.

They have no real way of gauging who pirated it but would have bought it. All they will see is poor sales and the game must have been crap.

There's a facebook page. Go flood it with disapproval of the DRM. I don't do facebook so I'll search out a personal email.

It's funny how they claim to know how many of the pirates would have bought their games if piracy wasn't an option. I've heard figures mentioned at least. It's bull really as what you say is true but I was commenting on what Cthulhu said about how the only way to make a statement about DRM is to avoid games with it entirely. I'd imagine pirating would be just the same from their perspective. If people never bought but pirated games with DRM the message might get across?

Most pirates who didn't buy the game after pirating wouldn't have bought it anyway, so their numbers are invalid.
the % of pirates that bought it after pirating it would have bought it maybe, but those who didn't wouldn't even bother.

Now are you saying that pirates who didn't buy the game wouldn't of bought it anyway because of the DRM, or because the game is bad? Big difference.

Pirating goes up with DRM. Spore, with one of the DRMs that was considered in court to be a rootkit (I have no idea how they weren't sued for using it) had the highest pirate rating ever.

Sad thing is they probably keep doing this because they make more money off the DRMs that prevent resale then the money they lose to potential buyers. Spore even forced multiple people to rebuy the game.

Well still that's a pretty small % if my sources were correct, I may be wrong though. I still think that early DRM like a CD-key is ok, but beyond that it should be considered illegal.
Hell maybe have a resale feature that can be used to unregister that CD key so the game can be sold used, but it costs 1$ or something to reactivate it or something to get the devs a little bit of money flow per used sale.
