Interested... Quite alot, to be honest. But yea, it has a TAD of the look of a engine test. But hell, even that, with this amazingly awesome looking engine would be enough for me. However, the part with "Playstation network and Xbox live" and "maybe PC but have not yet stated how it will be published" parts are VERY worrying to me.

This looks like Black and White meets a tiny fraction of the complexity of Dwarf Fortress. I haven't seen many good city builder/god games in a while; maybe its time someone revived the genre.

Interested, but I'd rather see what gameplay looks like rather than prettied up trailers run on the best machines of the day showing off shiny features instead of what really matters.

that 'trailer' is just a video designed to wow people about the engine. That makes me think they're more interested in licensing the engine (which is a sound business move!) than making a great game.

Given how they're lying assholes, I'm guessing the latter.

What makes you say that? I don't see anything there that would require RAM beyond what we have today.

Fluid dynamics and deformable landscape were already made into a game - Maelstrom. It needed 2 gigs of RAM to run smoothly IIRC, but that was then. This is now. Even my medium-price-category laptop has 4 gigabytes and a hyperthreaded 2.something GHz dualcore. And software tech evolves as well.

The amout of RAM it takes is dependent on the size of the particles, larger particles less RAM needed.

The fluid sim doesn't look all that machine-annihilating.  I'm not seeing a strong 3d component; for example, I'm guessing that you can't have sand under hard rock (IE cool some lava on top of sand -> solid layer of solid rock).  Nobody's expecting to find lava tubes here.  The water looks totally awesome, but it doesn't need all kinds of subsurface eddies; you're not tracking stuff like salt and freshwater mixing in estuaries for example, and you're not going to undercut shores...you're going to use a more visible, understandable mechanic.  Why simulate something the players can't see and won't use?  Sand collapsing down into dunes is pretty simple stuff.

The water looks *smooth*.  Yes, it has a lot of data points.  But not THAT many.  It looks like an accurate simulation inside the cut-down physics that they choose to represent...and the water textures are a minor masterpiece.  I would say that the big revolutionary part of their fluid mechanics engine was in choosing what parts to simulate and which parts to leave out, where to add detail and where to take it away, and it looks like they did a very good job in making those determinations.

Yeah, just like some outdoor places in Oblivion actually made me feel homesick for places I've been (that is one GORGEOUS game), I think this one will bring back the feeling of digging little trenches and building little berms in sand and pouring water through them.  Won't be as accurate, sure, but it'll be fun to dink around with.  And it's a game I'll have to keep my hypothetical kids away from, and drag them to the beach instead...

The way the tech demo responded to what the presenter was doing to the environment reminds me alot of those (often cool) sand-fall games with different settings and things you can control.  The way the particles work to create those smooth presentations really reminds me of that.

They said a couple weeks ago on their Facebook page that the release date isn't until "summer 2011," so it looks like they pushed it back a bit. Exciting game, though! I'm definitely buying.
