Even if the gameplay sucks, that engine is incredible.
I would buy just the engine and play around with it.

I think that's sort of the issue. Especially if that's what the DEVs are thinking, because shitty game + great engine = licensing ka-ching ka-ching ka-ching. The kind of thing gamers don't give a shit about, but publishers and developers do.

Stuff like this make me really skeptical (or cynical).  It basically looks like a really nice "toy" or tech demo, but how much of this amazing stuff will get cut out once they have to turn it into a real "game" and their publisher has to mass market it to the most common denominator?
So the problem is with the publisher? Get rid of them and sell it yourself!

(Yes, I know this won't happen. But it should, otherwise we end up with Spore-like letdowns)

Yeah, that'll happen a few days before never. Besides, devs have just as much to gain out their licensing royalties as the publishers do.

Engine DOES look amazing.  However, it really seems like a novelty.  Like you guys said, its hardly even anything more than an engine demo.

I was the same way.  I got super pumped waiting for SPORE to come out, thought there would be endless replayability and everything you could think of.  While running through the game once was fun, I had absolutely no desire to even restart, and walked away feeling a little disappointed.

The perfect GOD GAME is my dream game.  I think that's why I love DF so much.

I have high hopes for this game, but if the sandbox only allows you to terraform, that novelty will wear off faster than the racing stripe in my undershorts.

It's already not my ideal god game. That doesn't mean it doesn't sound interesting, but damnit, I want some real wrath of god type game play. No more of this "culturally ambiguous humanoids just trying to get by crap." I wanna shoot plagues at non-believers, drop volcanoes to show I mean business, flood the world and generally be an asshole of a deity. No games are filling that niche atm.

It was a dev-diary, if you listen to the lady in the trailer. Not a game demo, not an alpha even, a dev-diary showing some engine tech. The game itself comes next :P

A dev-diary, huh?  So this is the equivalent of Subversion's city generator demos, right?

Anyway, this looks neat as hell, and I am interested.  Very, very interested.

Not quite. Subversion is all about the procedural code and the thinking behind it.

This is pure graphics and physics wankery that the AAA industry thrives on.

Plus she says very little that's actually important or informational. She simply narrates what you can see for yourself.

Same. Even if the game doesn't turn out very good I would love to just get my hands on that tech demo.

Perhaps... but it's some pretty darn impressive physics. I could care less about graphics, but a good physics engine can make almost anything fun. Not as a normal game perhaps, but as a toy to mess around with.

Hell, even if the game turns out like crap, I would buy it just to mess with the killer fluid dynamics. I've been looking for a game with good fluid dynamics.

Procedural stuff sure can be some pointless wankery, too.  And did you see how many of the Subversion diaries were totally uninformative trash, before they decided to start giving us useful information?

Considering they weren't even announcing what the game was at that time, and most of those diaries were describing their design process in great technical detail....

No. I didn't. They were pretty clear on where the line of demarcation was between development diary and actual game info. And if you bothered to read more than one Subversion Dev Journal, you either were doing it because you wanted to know what he was doing, or you have a compulsion to read shit that's above your head.

So Subversion dev logs, up until 18, was not game info, and anyone looking at them thinking they were missed the point in his very first dev log.

Compared to From Dust, which is now billing itself as an official game, calling that a dev journal is like calling a teaser cinematic trailer game play. For someone that wants tangible information on the actual game, this dev journal didn't give them squat either, NOR did it give any propeller hat stuff about its technical details. Introversion didn't run out to Gamespy et. al and were like "here's our dev log!"

That makes it a tech demo with a sexy female narrator. That's the difference.

there's also a HUGE difference between what is essentially a studio of 3 guys in their garages across the world and a Ubisoft studio dedicated to working on the game - guess which one is going to get the most attention from a big site like Gamespy? :P
