From Dust
« on: August 18, 2010, 07:24:16 pm »

http://ps3.gamespy.com/playstation-3/dust/1114048p1.html

Coming in Spring 2011. Make sure you watch the video.

From Dust is supposedly the next big God game. Only you don't play God. You play the Shaman of a tribe trying to survive.

The real "God" of From Dust is apparently the earth. The team developing it has developed their own engine that does some ridiculously cool fluid simulations and terrain deformation. Repeat: ridiculously cool fluid simulation.

They game also models plant growth, top soil, erosion and of course, magma.

That's all there really is at the moment.

It looks cool; there's no denying that. I get a strong Black and White vibe just looking at it. And they say there's much more to reveal about what the engine is capable of, and what's involved in game play.

Not exactly what I was hoping for when I heard this was announced. From a technical standpoint, I'm interested. More interested if there's real game play backing up all those fluid dynamics. However, and this is probably just me being jaded, there already seems to be something slightly hollow or lifeless in what they've shown, it's hard to put my finger on it. I hope this turns out to be a really thoughtful game (the concept is interesting; downplaying the significance of man compared to the power of nature) and not just a really flashy tech demo with incidental game play.

What I wouldn't give for another Populous.

To bad Bullfrog is dead.

And the Ubisoft logo certainly gives me pause.

It looks pretty cool actually :) Really reminded me of Populous: The beginning.
I wouldn't be surprised if some of the devs are actually getting a lot of inspiration from that game ^^

This plus some kind of finger sensitive camera system coupled to a 3D display could lead the way to real 3D modelling clay in a virtual environment. Imagine hand crafting your own avatar, could be the start of a cottage industry, and the virtual economy is truly born. See, I new games would eventually save the world.

I really hope they're releasing this on the PC as well. This sort of game usually works better on a PC platform.

It's getting released on PC, but Ubi is being sketchy on the exact details.

That is honestly my biggest concern. Games like this do lend themselves to the PC, and not to consoles. I've been waiting for the next real god game since the last Black and White. Looks promising, but that's going to be a tender issue.

I know it's unrealistic, but I can't help but imagine little bearded babies for dwarves. In my mind, they come out of the womb fully bearded. That's how the mother carries them around, too, she just drags them around by the beard or ties it to her belt. When the father's on duty, he just ties their beards together and the baby just kind of hangs there, swinging to and fro with Urist McDaddy's movements.

How does RPS equate to PC exactly. Last I checked they were a generalized gaming site.

I came rainbows.  This game looks awesome, and I am not letting Ubisoft, shady details about PC porting, or any of that harsh my enthusiasm.

I think the Rainbow Gisum simulator is part of their next info release.
