To get a nice high cliff, I played with the world gen settings. Lowlands 50, midlands 0, highlands 50, super highlands 50. Made plains and mountains more common, and swamps and seas less common.

I'm pretty sure growing a real white tree at the top of the fort is impossible. It's technically part of the mountain biome, so no plants grow there. I'm going to pave the top with olivine to look like grass and just put a statue up there. If I'm lucky, they'll carve a statue of a tree.

You could make a "tree" out of white blocks of some kind.

Given the scale he's using, building a tree out of blocks wouldn't look like anything.... except blocks.

The White Tree could have had a growth spurt.

It would be lovely to explore this in adventurer mode :P

Update! I carved out another level, and have begun work on the King's hall.

You totally should make the first wall bigger.

I think that there's some kind of good tree colored white, you could use that

Holy crap. Looking awesome.

And you do make a good point, working on a megaproject does force you to learn everything in/about the game; either the easy way (the non-fun wiki method), or the fun way (got life insurance for a minimum of 300 dwarves?).

I mean, take a gander at my project, and you'll see how much my playing improves over the course of the project. Of course, I did mine in 40d, so for the time being, I've gotten the fey mood fulfillment reward (legendary) only for that version. I've yet to take a real shot at this version (which comparatively, I have lots of FUN). I've just been waiting for a stable enough version to be able to re/learn at a quicker pace without constant updates changing things around.

EDIT:
Do you have plans to coat the outer walls of the site with a layer of granite walls to clean up any of the odd color patterns that appear?

INSPIRATION:
Has anyone ever considered replicating sites from games like Silent Cartographer in HALO? It would have to be built on an island map with monuments sprouting out of different parts of the island, while there's a massive cavern inside with a building plugging the shaft. Have fun with aquifers on that one.

So this is being mined out rather than built?  Are you using any kind of automation?  Or just mass designating channels?

I would probably mine out the top, bottom, and sides, except for a hatch, then trigger it to make it go faster.

- Definitely. If I don't get burnt out by then, I may cast the whole outer wall out of obsidian.

I think that there's some kind of good tree colored white, you could use that
- The problem is getting it to grow.

- Probably not. I don't mind the color patterns. - I may reconsider when it's done.

- Mined out, except for part of the spur, and the very top layer. I had to build those out of rough blocks.
- No automation. Designating it all by hand. I did change my dwarf speed to 0 though.

This weekend I worked on finishing the walls for what I have carved out. I also constructed the Hall of Kings on the top level. I love the roof, but the windows on the sides didn't turn out as I'd hoped - a window needs a constructed floor under it, so I couldn't just build 3-story windows. I may take them out and replace them with glass block walls.

I've had a few more waves of migrants, so we're back up to a healthy population of about 70. My military is almost entirely decked out in steel I got from caravans - I haven't smelted anything myself. They are a mighty force - 2 titans and a forgotten beast lay dead in their wake. I stuffed all my animals in a zoo, but the dogs have puppies, like, every day. I may need to implement a solution for them...

I modded in a custom reaction to make free marble stone - there just isn't enough of it at this site for all the detail work I want to do.

Upcoming goals:
Finish carving/building the spur.
Carve out the last level.
Build arches for all the level-to-level stairways so you can actually see them in Stonesense.
Build the White Tower of Ecthelion - I have no idea what I'm going to put inside it. (The book says the first floor of the tower is the Hall of Kings, but I had to move it to it's own building - not enough room. Peter Jackson did the same thing.) It's going to be 15+ stories high and the only feature I know of is the secret room at the top with the Palantir.
Build shops and houses within the walls. Move my temporary workshops and storerooms inside the city.
