Let's Play: Age of Wonders - Shadow Magic

For this let's play, I'll be playing through the AOWSM campaign (minus the tutorial, of course). For those of you lucky enough to be acquainted with the game, I'll be playing with the unoffical 1.4 patch. For those of you who do not know the game, I would reccoment going to age of wonders heaven to learn about it, but I'll go through the (extreme basics) here.

For each update, I'm going to post a list of unit stacks like this:

Screenshots will be provided as well as and in some cases instead of location descriptions.

When the turns have not much going on for us to do, then I will do several in each update. When the turns become very large on complex, I will do one or two in each update. Of course, I will encourage you lot to post suggestions/instructions for the upocming turns. The first update (the start of the campaign) will be up shortly.

Well, you can issue orders for whatever stacks of units you want - if one of them includes a hero, so be it. However, you will not have exclusive control - if everybody else rules to do something, then the majority wins.

Anyway, let us get started with the first map!

We start the game with only Julia, no cities or other units. What shall we do, what shall we research, and how should we split the power income?

No plot summary? No choosing magic spheres?
Oh well.

Research Vengeful Vapor, leave the mana/research slider as it is.
Read the sign, recruit the hero, then follow the road. Send the hero ahead.

EDIT: Damn, I clicked on modify instead of quote when making the update after this one. I guess this update is lost to us forever.

Oaklead follow the path northeast, and thanks to his many movement points manages to capture two farms.


Julia travels west, but her path across the bridge is blocked by some of Vorsar's troops.

Have Oakleaf grab the crystals (research), then continue along the path.
Julia should attempt to recruit from the camp, ignoring it if the occupants are hostile, then follow Oakleaf.

Julia goes to the campsite, and the yeti and lonbowman there are nice enough to join us for free!


Oakleaf grabs the mana crystals and heads north, but finds a haunted crypt along the way - surely it will hold magic items!

I feel that we should continue on, returning to the crypt after we have more units.
All units should continue along the north road at their fastest pace.

Get enchant weapon. Make an enchanted yeti-sized hammer.

Oakleaf leads the way ahead, with Julia and the other units following behind. A mine is captured, and a watchtower, but the path is mostly one way. After crossing a bridge (and oakleaf giving advice to guard it to prevent raiders from taking the farms), the path opens up: any direction in the range of southwest to north is available to travel.

Also, Vengeful vapour is researched, and Julia starts researching Enchant Weapon.

Get enchant weapon. Make an enchanted yeti-sized hammer.
I'm afraid that the game doesn't work that way. Enchanting a unit with enchant weapon gives it a generic bonus to attack chance and damage. Items can be created if you have a highly upgraded wizard's tower, but magic items can only be wielded by wizards and heroes.

I think that I'm starting to remember this scenario.

All units: split up and search the forest for friendly elves. Avoid contact with hostiles.
