This is normal.
I guess there are ferries.

Yes, you will. I built my fortress on an island out in the middle of an ocean this release. Dwarf Traders came in, got nothing, left. Then not a month later the dreaded immigrants washed ashore...

The immigrants swim. The traders caulk the wagons and ford the riv... uh.. lake.

It is kind of annoying you can't do a no immigration original 7 only fort anymore though, at least without killing the immigrants.

I thought for sure there was a file called init.txt that either allowed you to change your population cap. If you set that population cap to seven, wouldn't that disallow / turn off immigrants?

Could be wrong, it's been a while since I've tinkered with that sort of shit.

It would also prevent them from reproducing beyond seven dwarves.  I think they're trying to setup a self-sustained hillbilly dueling banjo fort.

Just traders, no wagons come because it says the site is inaccessible.

I just thought of an easy way around this bug, I'll dig a trench around my fort(well it's actually a cabin cuz I didn't bring any picks).

uh, they reproduce just fine even if you set popcap to 0. the limit only stops more dwarves from immigrating, not dwarves from giving birth

Would it be to crass at this point to suggest the addition of genitals that can be wounded with permanent effects?

AFAIK, the minimum you can set your pop cap to is 10.
This means that you will still get a first wave of immigrants. This can make you exceed your pop cap even.
Don't be too sure yet there will be no immigrants.
In the latest version, there is a new init option which allows you to set the maximum number of children though. Either in absolute numbers (first number) or in a percentage of your total population.
It does not stop children from arriving with immigrants.
