Newbie fun!
« on: August 17, 2010, 11:42:12 am »

Okay.... got my last fortress lost due to security mishaps(a ramp next to my wall *facepalm*). 5 goblins took out 40 dworfs if anyone wants to know.

Looking for sum advice for sum stuff.

1. How does one remove a natural ramp/slope thingy?
2. How does one make his military more awesome?( not in the equipment way , my pikedwarf got nailed by a copper knife weilding goblin invader while he had steel armour)
3. any thing else for advice?

1. d->z
2. Have them train.
3. Traps are your friend, especially cage traps.

Then cage some goblins (like I said, cage traps are your friend), dump all their gear, and sic your military on them armed with training weapons. Your dwarves will beat the goblins senseless for however long it takes for them to die and gain weapon skill. For training shield use/armor use/dodging, I defer to this thread.

To the OP: watch out for the side effects of adopting the abovementioned spike room strategy:
- pets may die
- soldier's babies may die
- children may die

You can easily start a tantrum spiral if you don't plan accordingly (airlocks / one way passages for pets, and undrafting mothers with babies), so take care!

Burrow the children in a daycare.  This also helps you mash those baby snatchers.  I haven't tried to burrow a baby tho.
The pet thing can be hard even with an airlock you'll still loose some, but meh.

Leave the armor on the gobo, just take the weapon.  They will last longer against the wooden training weapon which means more skill learn'n.

One thing that works just as well as both of these but is much less time/resource consuming is to have squads with only 2 people in them is they are close combat dwarves. While this can get fiddly very quickly (needing to get 7 squads of 2 people to do much is FUN). But for training purposes this makes them spar a hell of a lot more rather then take a month to organise some combat training.

This way seems to be totally risk free (the combat reports show nothing more than "tapped lightly") and none of my dwarves have taken any injuries in any of my forts. In my latest fort my first 2 military dwarves are already sword-masters after 2 years. After the initial training period you can then condense them into larger squads.

Inspired by this thread I have made a handy dandy XflowchartX with my limited Gimp skills.

This should solve every problem you ever encounter.  Including goblin sieges.

"Urist Mcleader! Urist Mcleader! I accidentally flooded the lower levels of the fort with magma, and when I tried to fix it using the usual method, it flooded the middle reaches, and when I tried to fix that, well...Don't open the door."
