Could I mark off 500 gp and assume that I have an arbitrarily large supply of items from the goods and services lists that cost less than 10 gp? Obviously things like thousands of feet of hemp rope or infinite mules would be vetoed, but I would rather not have to keep track of all the items I am likely to bring...

Well, since we'll be travelling with a company (rebuilding my sheet in Mythweavers) we can say you have a wagon to carry all those things in.  Or...

Quote
Staff of Utility

At first sight this appears to be an ordinary 6' hickory quarterstaff shod with iron ferrules.  When picked up it becomes apparent that the staff weighs slightly more than a wooden staff of its type should.  When the correct command words are spoken the staff reforms into any mundane object or multiple mundane objects weighing no more than 15lbs.  In the event only one object is required that weighs less than the full amount, the remainder of the staff remains in its normal shape and the desired object detaches.

Any part of the staff may be transformed again at will, provided all parts are kept within 200ft of each other.  Bringing any part out of this diameter will cause it to become an inert lead copy of the object it resembled - it must be reattached to the staff and the correct command word spoken for it to be transformable again.

Any part of the staff destroyed by any means (including mundane means such as fire) will transform into lead dust and its mass must be replaced (see below).

Attaching any transformed part of the staff to the staff (or to any of the daughter objects) and speaking the correct command word will cause both parts to reform into a section of the staff.  Another command word spoken within 10ft of any portions of the staff will cause created objects to turn into soft, pliable lead and flow into a puddle at the speaker's feet - the speaker may then transform it back into staff sections as required.

If a part of the staff is irrevocably lost, but some of the staff remains, the wielder may repair the staff by playing an equal amount of gold by weight (50gp/lb) at the foot of the staff and speaking the command word to reform it.  The gold will be transmuted into the staff's body and any objects it replaces become useless lead and can no longer be transmuted back into the staff.

Any weapon designed for Medium sized characters (even an orcish double-headed axe) that weighs 15lbs or less can be created by the staff.  Ammunition can be created, but becomes soft, inert lead once it leaves the 200ft radius and will only deal 1pt of damage on impact (ammunition that hits its target within the range deals damage as normal).

Padded or leather armour, light or heavy wooden and steel shields (but not tower shields) for Medium sized characters are all permissible (Small characters may have up to scale mail or breastplate due to the reduced weight).

Weapons and armour created by the staff are only of normal quality, not masterwork.

Creatures and animated objects may not be created by the staff.  The staff is capable of producing objects with moving parts.  No object created may exceed 10 cubic feet in volume at the time of its creation.

CL 1st; Craft Wondrous Item; fabricate; Prince 9000gp; Weight 15lb.

Damn.  When I balanced it, I couldn't get it to less than 9k.  If we fudged it so that the spell level was 1 (it's not powerful enough to really merit 'fabricate'), it would be 1800gp, or 360gp if you only allowed it to change once per day.

Been scanning through my sheet, plot notes etc.

Had a couple of personal quests outstanding, which I was secretly hiring the group (for 1500gp) for; kidnapping and disappearing the House Kurden ambassador for Judge Himmar Cech and then delivering our captives Gavala and Hurin (we may not have time to capture Sgt Harren, leaving him as an uncomfortable loose end to taunt us in future) to the Judge to commit justice and free Sgt Hajad so he can join us as a cohort + attract a mercenary band.

Should we continue with that, or assume these have been completed already and thus we are ready to deliver Lady Whatshername (I don't have her name written down) back to her rich noble homestead on the other side of the continent for reward?

I dunno, that seems kind of... weird?  With most mundane tools costing less than 10gp (Or even less than 1gp) how much use would you have to get out of something like that before it starts saving you money?

Yeah, the balancing is out for something of such limited utility.  Personally I'd arbitrarily rule it to cost 500gp and be-damn the usual rules of construction.  A 9000gp magic item that uses 'fabricate' should be something like a magic cauldron into which you can put raw materials, speak the command word and remove a constructed item of average quality (at will).

Personally I'd set it as using the 0th level spell "Mending".

Now, we're still using the "EAPDND" Hamachi and MapTool, yes? And which version of MapTool if we're still using it?

I will take a think on the magic item, but my gut says, who cares if a little 'fudging' goes on, but if we are to that point why keep track of it at all.

...

Thing is, how useful is a magic stick anyway? You can't eat it. You can't use it as a light source (can you? Huh... Maybe you can...) I mean, what use does it have other then ropes and other things? It seems like a good situation item, but does not really elevate the need to bring shit around.

Anyway, about the continuation of the story line. Do you people want to RP the meeting of the various people you need to talk to in game, on the thread, or sorta hand wave it with minimal RP? All are options I am fine with, although I would rather do the one on the thread.

For clarification, I believe you have two out of the three goblins, and were planning on leaving soon? Also I guess we do need a name for her, my notes just call her the sacrifice, you were not quite suppose to meet her like you did.

Let's call her Gudhild?

Personally I'd set it as using the 0th level spell "Mending".

I do believe we will be using those, I was thinking just maptools .84.

Ulf 2.0 should get Monkey Grip. Large greatsword, make it happen.

Oh shit yes.

No, I'm not actually going to do that.  I only get four feats and I need three of them for power attack/cleave/great cleave, because duh, and the fourth I want the initiative feat because my dex is kind of low.

Also, I'm wondering, and one of you mathcrafters would probably know.  My old weapon was a +1 Keen Greataxe (So 19-20/x3).  Is a Keen Greatsword (17-20/x2) a good idea, or should I put something else on it?

It is tentatively complete.  I might change some stuff, and I still haven't added the fluff info, but that's the character.

I don't know the damage die for both of those weapons, but here's my math assuming an average damage of 5. (1d8)

Statistically, 19-20/x3 will deal 5 damage 9 times for each time it deals 15. In twenty attacks, that's 120 average damage.
Statistically, 17-20/x2 will deal 5 damage 4 times for each time it deals 10. In twenty attacks, that's 120 average damage.

The value is the same. However, additional damage dice from critical-based enchantments and static bonuses that multiply on criticals lead me to believe that having more common criticals would be more effective. On the other hand, your maximum damage won't be (quite) as high as the 19-20/x3 weapon for those times when you have to bank everything on dropping an enemy now.

If one has higher damage dice, go with that one.

It is possible to miss with a critical threat, so increasing your threat-range to numbers that won't hit doesn't help. On the other end of the scale, damage beyond a target's hit-points is wasted. The greatsword is likely to waste fewer critical hits, is more consistent, and the dice are slightly greater. Given that overkill doesn't generally aid player characters and that player characters usually need to win every fight, I would recommend the greatsword. Given that monsters are generally trying to terrify player characters with the prospect of being killed outright without warning, and that monsters only need to win one fight, I would give them something less consistent, probably a scythe...

True, but there's no accounting for that without knowing the enemy's AC. Regardless, criticals that hit without a critical still hit, and thus will deal damage anyway.

I can always use Nerveskitter on Ulf if we have to, +5 Init. You should really take Monkey Grip though. You could pick up an item that could give you Nerveskitter 5 times a day for 1800 gp, and then switch init for MG.

Also, Amulet of Natural Armor only works if you already have NA. You should just grab a ring of protection or something. Deflection is a better bonus anyway (applies against touch and flat-foot, NA only applies against flat-foot). Or do what I suggested and get that Nerveskitter item.

Oh, and why is your gender 28? :P

EDIT: By the way, anybody else think we should have some kind of way of contacting eachother outside of the forums? Just in case they go down again or something. Steam, email, whatever else you can think of.

Monkey grip isn't all that good.  You still have the penalty, it just removes some "effort," whatever that means.

Increased damage die are neat, but you can also just wield two-handed weapons as one-handed weapons. Or wield two one-handed weapons like light weapons.

-2 attack is nothing. The effort means that normally you have to wield a Large one-handed as a two-handed. With the feat, you can wield a Large two-handed as a Medium two-handed.

You can wield a greatsword and heavy shield. You can dual-wield longswords with finesse. You can wield a large Goliath Warhammer. So many options!
