You guys are free to talk in this thread you know?

I was even thinking of doing some wrap up with the gobos and finding out what you are doing next in the thread.

"So... this is the portal gem they were talking about?"  Merrian whistles softly.  "If so, we seriously need to not tell anyone about this.  We should lock it up in a secure vault and say we found mention of a portal but not much more, because you know what?  If we don't just hand this over, if we play this smart, we can make millions out of this.  Real millions.  I know that it's a cliche to say that money makes the world go round, but it really does.  If we hand this thing over to our bosses now, we might get six grand.  That's pretty nice, but it's what?  A year of moderately enjoyable living at best, split between us?  We hold onto this for two or three years, start on a real plan, we can make enough money to do anything we want.  Life in luxury, acquire as many books as we want, set up a gods-damned hospital if we have to.

"Because if you're interested, I have a plan."

"We were under contract to report the existence of a gate, if any, and clear the place for potential occupancy, not to report items of interest.  After all, if they're letting us keep the rest of the loot we found here, we can count this under that clause.

"Alright.  We don't sell the gem off.  Instead, we stick it in a vault and start preparations.  One of the advantages of high class adventuring, like you're doing, is that you get a lot of reward for the risks you take.  More than most can dream of seeing.  I propose we gather funds, gather support and gather men.  We set everything up into place, and one, two, three years from now we come back and we set up shop here on this site.  We clear a road to Stormhold, we guard against or even co-opt the lizzies into working for us, and we set the gem up ourselves with a few good mages.  Then, bam!  We have a highly valuable resource whose passage we can not only tax but which will attract a ton of people to live - who we can tax as well.  Not to mention all the feeds wizards will pay to study it.  But this is only possible once we gather enough support to guard it as well.

"We do this, we reap much, much larger rewards than just handing it in.  'She' wasn't entirely lying.  She could have given us all her minions promised, but she wasn't sharp enough to know how to use it, and neither were they.  We can."

I'm still thinking of a response (I suck at in character chat via forum), but do we really want to make ourselves a kingdom? That sounds like a lot of work for a D&D game.

That is what butlers (or in this case stewards) are for. You be hero kings but leave the day to day running of the kingdom to your seneschal.

Yeah, stewards are pretty important.  And in any case, if we get there and I want to turn into Picard instead of Kirk, I'll retire Skye and roll up a new character.  Nobody else needs to get tied down with much in the way of responsibilities - just wealth and fame!

"So your plan is to basically create our own city, based around several portals through which hostile elementals could come pouring through at a moment's notice? Not to mention the various denizens of Xen'drik might not appreciate us setting this kind of thing up. We're going to need to be a lot more powerful for this kind of thing. We should be if we're going to be doing this a couple years from now, but I don't know if that would be enough."

(A city does sound like fun, but that would take a LOT of investment, a LOT of people, and a LOT of power.)

I don't want to give it up until we have at least had a chance to study it, but lying to our employer wouldn't sit well with me either. So long as it doesn't turn into just some tool to lord power over our peers...

Rorakar doesn't really know much of contracts, but his word is roughly the same thing, so he'll take a bit of convincing. Durn civilization.

Looking through the log of our first encounter, it seems that they were always referred to as "boss"...

"Lying?  We're not lying to our employer at all.  We aren't telling him about an item of treasure that we recovered as part of our 'looting' clause, but we're not lying.  And I believe the whole point of the gem there is to prevent streams of elementals rushing in from the planes, but yes - we'd need a great deal of support to make this work.   Furthermore, exactly what do you suppose our employers would do with the gem?  I assure you, they would do exactly the same thing, but we would have neither true profit nor real control of its use.  I understand that we don't want madmen using this to summon armies of demons into our world - by error or intent.  To that end, if we maintain joint control over its use we can at least prevent such things happening."

My previous other post wasn't in character, and the employer would most likely want a thorough explanation of the sight. Keeping it is one thing, but keeping it secret is almost certain to involve some measure of dishonesty at some point, even if we don't discuss loot...
