Namely, if a dwarf has a uniform assigned to him, will he constantly check for new equipment for the set until the entire set is filled out? Or do I have to re apply the uniform to make them "check" the armor stockpiles again?

He will.

He'll also replace parts of inferior quality if there are better available.

I believe that he will try to update his uniform once per month. Not entirely sure, but that's the impression I get.

This can be very annoying if you have equipment in production and want to use your military at the same time. In my experience they get superior quality items as soon as they are finished. A whole squad can be occupied by getting better equipment when the items travel down from the upper (best equipment) to the lower ranks (worst equipment) of the squad.

You're going to want to make at least iron armor.  Leather works great against animal "weapons," but once the gobbos show up they'll tear through your leather-clad dwarves like a little kid through wrapping paper on his birthday.

They will pick up new equipment at the moment it was forged and they have inmediate time (like no job or invidual combat drill).

i have multiple very complex uniforms and it appears they will run to the forge at the exact moment the forger finished one of their pieces. sometimes even 4-5 will run for the same item(s). same if an upgraded version is aviable, but it seems they wont upgrade weapons if they have lots of kills with it, so getting it nealy named or attached you have to tell them manually to drop the freaking copper sword with 80 dead raccoons on it, for that brand new masterpiece adamantium axe

btw, military dwarfs sometimes try and take the most valuable piece of armor assigned to them. For example if you have +steel mail shirt+ and *<<steel mail shirt>>* which was encrusted with yellow diamonds, military dwarf can forego the quality of armor for the value of it overall.

Do inactive militia upgrade and wear uniforms as well?

Can I have my whole 40 pop capped fortress assignmed to inactive squads with bronze uniforms so everyone is in armor?

they do sometimes, but as long they are occupied with civil jobs they wont pick armor, you ahve to either station them once in a while (they will first run to pick up the equipment) or strip all jobs until they are equiped.
