Fascinating embark location
« on: August 16, 2010, 05:29:36 pm »

I know these are a dime a dozen, but .. here's Brutalbeer: a vibrant little promontory at the intersection of untamed wilds and terrifying biomes, featuring dolomite, a comfortable warm climate, good green stuff, a nice little river that drops a breathtaking 13 z-levels straight down, elephants, and ... zombie giant eagles!  :o

The good part of the map is very defensible and wall-friendly, looks like this will be a fun map!

If you see my screenshot a in the "Whats going on in your fort" thread you will see you don't need to worry about having flat areas to build walls on... Just collapse the mountain that's in your way!!

[EDIT:

The lower corner of the map was a mountain rising a bunch of Z levels... Until it was collapsed to make way for MARBLE!

Did collapsing it remove all the blocks too? I thought cave-ins with natural walls made them stack up, not turn into materials. Huh.

I dug out each layer to train my miners (all 7 were miners), then dumped the rock and collapsed it.  There was nothing left.  I did think the game had crashed though!

Well I didn't want to trash up that groovy waterfall, that's a lot of the charm of this map.  Big flat areas aren't all that hard to come by, tall waterfalls are :)

I play on a laptop, tall waterfalls would no doubt kill my FPS before too long. :(

Surprisingly it's pretty low overhead, still running at capped fps (another nice thing about it going straight down I suppose).

What exactly is the point in building walls over ramps that go straight down to ocean?
Do goblins have boats now?   :-X

True, but at a certain velocity the resulting explosion expels invader-bits at fatal speeds. You don't want to be dropping trogdolyte-shaped shrapnel bombs into your boneworks.

Make sure to channel out/wall over the brook. Your enemies can walk right over it.
