Some military questions

Perishable food dropped from backpacks equipped by my squad got dropped, when one of the dwarves wouldn't stop complaining about the drafts, or long patrols (which I haven't set yet...). Now the meat gets dropped on the floor and started to create miasma in my barracks. The problem is that I cannot get any of my dwarves to take it to the refuse or pick up the dropped gear. Is there a way for my dwarves to pick up dropped equipment? I tried using the forbid/claim method and eventually tried dumping it but to no avail.
