Classic Sidescrollers
« on: August 15, 2010, 09:21:56 am »

We all know the new, ridiculously impossible sidescrollers. But what about the classics?

Einhander, and Raystorm are two of my favorites. Einhander is probably the best with the semi-3D levels, the ridiculous bosses, and the western mecha.

What are some of your favorites for N64, and PS or other consoles?

I grew up in this decade. I was about 5 or 6 when I played Einhander.

Sue me.

Raystorm was pretty fun. I used to play the demo like mad; actually got to play the game, it was awesome.

As for classics, I remember playing 1942 on the Commodore 64 and arcades. Fun times.

Others I can list are Blade Eagle 3-D, and I suppose Zillion 2: The Tri-Formation for the Sega Master System.

Action Fighter, Astro Flash, R-Type... The list goes on. Oh, and we can't forget Zaxxon.

That's it for the shooters, at least.

As for other games, I guess Double Dragon has always been a classic. I prefer the SMS version, however, more than the arcade or Genesis versions. The classic Sonic games rocked. Been a die-hard fan of those for the longest time. Of course, there's the classic Zillion to list among the games (which I have a speedrun in my livestream channel, link's in the thread). And if you want to include it, Gangster Town (with the original light gun) is deserving of being on the list. Oh, and why not? Let's include Flashback in this list (though lacking in the scrolling part).

R-Type...
In all it's variants! R-Type is like _the_ friggin classics of all classics :D

Of course, there was good stuff before that, but then came R-Type!

If Flashback counts, then so does the original Prince of Persia. That one was pretty cool, even without the time powers and parkour. For the NES, I mostly played the Mario games. For Super Nintendo, I had Super Mario World and Donkey Kong Country 3. And I've later played Super Metroid on an emulator, and that kicked ass.

How are you gentlemen!! Let's not forget Zero Wing, if only for the intro.

Zelda 2. It's fun- brutalhard, perhaps, but people liked Ghosts n Goblins didn't they?

Technically it's top down, but (speaking of Apogee) Death Rally. (which is available for free and you don't even have to use DOSbox)
