Too many meat byproducts
« on: August 14, 2010, 09:01:15 am »

Not that I don't like detail, but, when butchering my livestock, my meat stockpiles clutter up with all those intestines, tripe etc.
I used to butcher animals all the time in 40d, and make meat roasts. But in the new versions, I find I rarely slaughter animals anymore, because they give just way too much products to properly process.
Sure, I could dump them.. But that's about 10 dumping jobs per animal slaughtered.

The "intestines, tripe, etc." can be eaten by your dwarves. The only unusable waste product is "<<insert animal here>> chunks."

There are some useless byproducts nerve tisue for one but most parts are usefull. Tripe is for example an excellent piece of food. So let your dwarf eat it. If it clutters your workshop make a food and refuse stockpile. You can store everything there. If you go to the refuse stockpile you will find bones and tooth for craftsdwarfs. Skin for tanning hair and nerve tissue for dumping. But that's usually only a few parts for each annimal.

Obviously, your cooks aren't working fast enough to keep up with meat production. Apply magma.

More cooks.  I slaughter dozens of animals at a time and have two legendary cooks that burn through it in a few minutes.

The "meat problem" (which isn't a problem at all, really) can be dealt with in two ways: keep your animal population low, or keep your cooking facilities well-prepared.  The extra meat types are well worth the hassle, however, especially for large animals.  A single elephant can now feed a fortress of 200 for half a year.  Keep your breeding stocks small and your kitchens well-run, and you'll be rolling in prepared meals before long.

Indeed. Lavish meals made with elephant meat and cheese makes a WONDERFUL trade good.

My fort had a VERY skilled hunter who would bring in a gazelle or warthog every couple of minutes, stopping only when he ran out of ammo.  Once the kitchens were done rendering the fat they started making prepared meals and that sort of solved the problem.  You wouldn't believe how many different recipes Dwarves have for tallow.

Well, I already produce way more prepared meals, with 3 cooks, than my dwarves can eat, and more than enough to buy out any caravan, by processing my quarry bush leaves, syrup and flours into meals. Those are worth many times more than elephant roasts. And no, I don't want more cooks. There are more useful jobs to spend dwarves on, like smelting, and magma-trap testing.
In my opinion, this many meat byproducts kinda disrupt the balance. I like to cook my dwarves varied meals, and used to be able to do so without accessing the kitchen screen all the time, to forbid and allow ingredients.
I do indeed solve it for now, by keeping my animal population low (caging them so they don't breed), and almost never butchering animals.
What adds to my frustration, is the fact that when processing fat into tallow, instead of turning a stack of 5 fat into a stack of 5 tallow, it now needs 5 seperate jobs, turning a stack of 5 fat into 5 stacks of 1 tallow. Especially annoying with larger animals, where the stack of fat will clutter up the kitchen, making jobs go *real* slow.

Keep your tallow safe from the cooks. It will become very useful for soap in the next version or two. Even ones that is, not the buggy odds.

also since the tallow gets split, its much less useful for prepared meals.

While adding magma to anything will make it dwarfy, adding the word "magma" to your post does not necessarily make it funny.
