« on: August 14, 2010, 07:08:59 am »

Well, from time to time i like to launch emulators to play some great long-forgotten titles.
I love pixelgfx.

Sometimes, i am searching for interesting ripped gfxes from these games.

I thought it may be good idea to share findings here.

Those alien breed tiles are sweet. I may try to make a Wasteland tileset using that.

Is Pixelgfx a ripper program, or did you mean as in pixel graphics from games?

EDIT:
Ah, I see. On that note, any ways of extracting sprites/gfx from Dos games outside traditional means (print screen+Paint)? I mean, getting/extracting them from some games (console emulators) through tile editors and playthroughs/extractor programs is one thing; Dos/Windows games, on the other hand, are something else. Especially Windows games. Like, oh let's say Roller Coaster Tycoon. That, I figure, would have tons upon tons of sprites; but the landscape tiles shouldn't be too hard to extract. As for Dos games, Covert Action could have some extractables.

..my bad,
i had pixel graphics on mind, not specific ripping software.
Great pieces of art, small forms.
Ripping is pain in the ass, and there's no universal tool for this, usually.

Sorry for that topic, retronostalgia strikes back.

I was probably your age when lemmings came out :P

Lemmings, Alien Breed, Dune 2, Chaos Engine? I suspect McBeer is an old Amiga owner?

You can find rips of a lot of snes era game graphics by looking for rm2k tilesets.

That said, I'm not too overly fond of this idea because ripping graphics like this is actually quite illigal(even if it's for free) and I would personally want to have Dwarf Fortress and lawsuits as far apart as possible. Especcially because there's a lot of frankensteining when it comes to graphics sets, to the point that I think very few people realise that certain graphics have commercial origin, which could be dangerous in the future.

Also, yes, there are other projects that use ripped graphics and that aren't being shut down by big companies, but unlike those games, DF actually has some recognition in the gaming industry.

So yeah, just a word of warning.

old Amiga owner?

Atari 65xe, c64, a500, a1200 ex-owner/user..only c64 left.

OT: Amy with newest winuae has emulated...fdd sound and we can even set visible monitor BEZEL, imagine that. It is not same feeling, but weirdly, it helps :)
Madness.
Hail to the maniacs.

Wise words, therahedwig,
but nobody is talking here about sharing DF with ripped content.
I just wanted to show how DIFFERENT things may be squished into 16x16 drawn with 8-16 cols...hard to believe. (vide: Lionheart).
Btw, i think, that retro 8-16 bit society<->company relationships differs from console society<->megacorps a bit ...Legends/cash, y'know.
Concluding: damn, the floor is still slippery.

G'night.. it's been a long day.
