So I've built a fort at least partially in obsidian cast in the magma sea, and now I've got magma men popping up to set my fort afire. Can they simply spawn in any tile that used to be magma or do i have a leak somewhere?

You have a leak somewhere. The only place (nonspoiler) creatures can spawn is the edge of the map.

(and it's also worth it to note that magma men don't migrate into the magma sea... at least I don't think they do!)
