First of all, we should dig down this tower and build a monument to commemorate the time our brave team of researchers came here! After that... um... we'll see!  :D

But Dariush, what if we disturb the dead, what if they don't really want us here ? I don't really want to be involved in being haunted by spirits,my friend, I could make some statues, that is my job after all, but I'm NOT digging down there.

What are we, some kind of elves? We are dwarves! We shall dig into earth, extract metal from it's depth, forge weapons and repel whoever is disturbed!

Now you're starting to sound like Metroid Prime-era Space Pirates.

Meeting Time in the Bonelands:

The first fortress-wide meeting was off to a good start- well, it was off to a start. An argumentative, confused start. Dariush and McDbuhos were bickering about ghosts and spirits, Derm was trying to come up with a new floor plan for the dining room, and Olon was in the center of it all, listening and wondering what he'd managed to get himself in to.

“Oh, sure, we could knock down all the towers and rebuild them as a luxury casino, Dariush , if you want that.” McDbuhos was saying. “That is, if you want us all to be murdered in our sleep by vengeful spirits! Tell her that, boss!”

“I've yet to meet an angry ghost that could stand up to good dwarven steel!”

“Right!” Mipe interjected.

“Er, how many angry ghosts have you actually met?” This question came from Rance, who had been silent up till that point. Dariush looked annoyed for a moment.

“Well, all right, none. But I'm sure that if I did meet one, I'd soon send it crawling back to it's grave!”

“That's not how spirits work! They haunt you. You can't chop them up with-”

Derm interrupted, saying “I think we have to dig down a bit no matter what. We're looking for artifacts, and we haven't found any up here, right Olon?” All attention turned to Olon again.

“Well, uh, yes.” Olon shrugged. “It seems like the ruins up here have been thoroughly looted. If there's any unknown history to be found, it's underground. I just don't think we should dig down through the towers themselves! We've got to preserve these places! What we really need is a plan for digging around them, that's what I've been working on and-”

“Got it already, Olon.”

“Oh! Well, then. Well done, Derm. You've certainly been busy.” He took the rolled up sheet of paper she was handing him and laid it out on the table. Everyone shoved up against him to get a better look.

The map was... rough, but it was a plan. Of sorts.

"This plan looks god-awful."

"Well, at least we don't run the risk of disturbing anything, right? Who ever heard of ghosts hanging out on trash heaps?"

"Not quite what I meant, man."

The Plan:

(Ok! Now I got a plan, such as it is. Things should be moving quicker now, at least until the inevitable disasters start striking. Also, I hope this post makes sense. I'm tired.)

We should connect the structures by sky-bridges and turn the ruins of our ancestors into the rejuvenated dwarven capitol, using the riches of the earth we uncover.

Then, build an army from the dwarves who flock to the glorious city, and crush the humans and elves along with the goblins.

Don't knock down the towers, please. We could make our own, or build a wall surrounding them and fill the space between with temples to Armok.

I'm pretty certain that the towers have sunk into the earth a little since they were erected millenia ago, and no less I'm certain that any artifacts should lie straight under them! So, dig trough them!

Hmm, sky-bridges sound good. However let's not get ahead of ourselves. First, we should cut some trees and set up a camp up here, make some beds and such...maybe set up some booby defenses so we won't get disturbed by the fauna.

Checking for passages underground could prove useful, doubtlessly there are some tunnels, or we can use the opportunity to link the towers underground as well.

In that case, i'll take a migrant named Vercingetorix. Make him into a legendary swordsman.

Draft:

When the nobles allowed Tombpraises to leave despite knowing that he was really intent on some daft peace-mongering, they composed a plan to send some loyal dwarves to these old towers, to see if they might be worthy of being restored as a proper military outpost.

In the first wave of migrants, one of the local count's most trusted folk will arrive. The finest liar in that group,  Anglur Limulnin, is ordered to do his very best to integrate himself to the group by making a lot of friends, become the broker of the group and await further orders.

Preferably a male with a long moustache, but a non-bald female is also acceptable. Not hideously fat, please. If you can only change the first name, just use Anglur and leave the old surname.

From the Journals of Olon Tombpraises, Volume 1:

It's the 26th of slate in the year 1051. Our digs have started, and, while we've found nothing of note thus far, I remain quite optimistic! Another reason for optimism: Dariush and Rance have managed to set up the start a small farm.

Naturally, I don't expect to be here long enough to need extensive farming, but it can't hurt to have a surplus of food. Aside from that it's as dull as can be. I found a rock that looked like it might have been an ancient artifact, preserved by the earth for centuries beyond counting, but it turned out to be a bit of stale plump helmet. Hm.

Events on or about the 21st of Hematite
The view from the top of the tower was really something, McDbuhos thought. Not quite as thrilling as the view when he had hit the tower, face first at near terminal velocity, surrounded by the shattered remains of a wagon... but still something worth seeing.

Ah, but the tower to the north made their home base look insignificant. It was a ruin worth exploring Which was why he and Mipe had knocked down the fortifications at the edge of their own tower, and were now laying out the foundations for a great sky-bridge, to link the two huge ruins in the most unsafe way possible.

Mipe was looking over the rough plans they had drawn up, trying to find flaws “So... do you think this thing needs railings?”

“I can't see why it would. They'd just distract from the view.”

“Right, right. I'll note that down.” She spent a minute or two updating the blueprints, then looked up in surprise. “Say, what's that moving down there? It looks like-”

McDbuhos squinted as he tried to see what Mipe was pointing at. “Huh. It looks like... four or five... by whatever god is listening, are those dwarfs?”

From the Journals of Olon Tombpraises, Volume 1

It's been an odd day. Five dwarfs just showed up on our doorstep, telling me that they had come to “support our efforts”, whatever that means. I hope it's a good sign, and that it means the powers that be actually favor my little research project, but...

I certainly didn't ask for more assistants. It's quite odd. At least a few of them have introduced themselves.

(Hooray for migrants! All five of them. Still, things! Events!)
