best tileset?
« on: August 13, 2010, 09:37:19 pm »

I was wondering if there is any tileset that is commonly agreed to be the best.

if there isn't, I have a 1920 x 1080 monitor and I am looking for a nice looking tileset that will show as much information as possible.

Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.    :D

My own recomendations: Ironhand&Wormslayer.

It's big (18x18) and very nice-looking, so it's perfect for 1920:1080.

Me personally, I dont like the squares, so i use Kein's tileset, with Luc1d's graphics...
I just did this to demonstrate the awesomeness of the shine!

I'd have to say that Ironhand's (shown above), Phoebus', and Mayday's are the three most common. I use Phoebus' myself.

Phoebus is really nice btw, but I dislike symbols in walls (but otherwise it's great).

I personally use Anikki's tileset, which comes in 8x8, 10x10, 16x16, and 20x20.
8x8:

There's something about it I just like.

I always go back to Dorten's tileset, it's small (9x9) so lets you see more of the game, it's very readable and I love the diagonal walls.

Makes the geometry of the fort stand out a lot.

A couple of examples on the DFMA:

Now if someone couple come up with a nice complete graphic pack in 9x9.

A s helpful as that topic is, I was hoping for screenshots of fortresses and gameplay.  Pictures that show the tileset in action.   :)

It's changing really fast too, so if you keep up with me, you can download a patch every couple weeks or so!

We're just getting better and better! = P

Ironhand's is most fantastic. Definitely recommend it.

I'm using Ironhands tileset aswell. Previously I used Mayday's set, but after changing to 2010 version I started to look for alternative version until I found Ironhands set. It's hard to describe why I prefer Ironhands work over Maydays. Both definitely offer high quality, but there's something more "polished" and "smoothier" in Ironhands tileset. It's also a bit darker in a good way, so it suits the atmosphere better. I also like his passion when it comes to modding; frequent updates and new versions and plans! Every day more jaws-dropping news and ideas.

I would like to post a pic of my fortress using his tileset, but there's goblin siege and titan assault going on... better to hurry...
EDIT:
Screenshot, my fortress' front gate and traps. Forest Titan is yellow I-mark, trapped between bridges and allows soldier to fire freely from towers.

I use Phoebus', and am quite happy with it. Ironhand's looks a bit too cartoonish for me, but I can completely see why people like it. There is no "best" tileset, just go with what suits you.

Phoebus is really nice btw, but I dislike symbols in walls (but otherwise it's great).
There are a few different options in the folder, with different types of symbols etc, perhaps Phoebus should release an option of having no symbols in the walls. They're one of the things I like most, saves a lot of time in the look menu ;)
