Too many Slugman
« on: August 13, 2010, 04:38:27 pm »

I managed to capture some, so I tamed them. A few years later I have 30 adults. Caging them would be cruel 'cause they'd starve, and I don't want to butcher them. So I need ideas.

What can I do with these guys that won't kill them?

Actually, I don't think that animal men can starve. I'm not sure about that, though.

Civilized creatures (including animal men) that belong to your fortress do need to eat and drink, so it is possible for them to starve.  I suspect that dying of thirst will be the bigger threat with them.  As for the OP, you're not going to have much luck asking for something to do with them that doesn't involve their horrible deaths.  If you'd asked for suggestions for amusing ways to kill them off you'd get a lot more help.

Well, you could always try to separate the males and females into two closed rooms and feed them through a hole in the roof or by some airlock method.

But honestly, I'd just slaughter the bastards. There's no such thing as "too cruel" in this game.

Well if you remove the [MULTIPLE_LITTER_RARE] tag from dwarves I think they have like 2-4 children each time they give birth. And if you get enough mothers up on the pillars you can probably get a good waterfall going.

Drop them down into the caverns to form their own slugman kingdom.

That wouldn't work. The males send out reproduction spores so the females would get pregnant anyway.

Go into their raw file. Delete the [FEMALE] tag from their female caste. That effectively spays every slugman in the world forever.

If you don't want them dead or their reproductive capacity destroyed via lucky injuries(possible?) or modding, you could always make them part of your military. I'd recommend building a retracting bridge over your entrance so it will rain tame anthropomorphic slugs down on your next ambush, but you'd probably think that cruel and anyway they'd act more as sword repositories than actual fighters.

You could always make them available as pets in the animals screen, I suppose. That's probably the only use for them that won't see them dead.

I like this one, except that they would invariably die when a FB arrives.  Maybe wall off the caverns?

Will tame sentient animals farm/hunt for their own sustenance, or would you have to keep feeding them pre-rendered food?

If you can recruit them, make them drop off a 2 Z-level platform (retracting bridge) for use in medical experiments. Very useful, doesn't kill them (well most of the time anyway).

Assuming the healthcare system works with slugmen..

Okay plan B: Kill all the females males.

That's only half-cruel, right?

do tame sentient animals need to eat?

Yup. And they can't be put in the military, or do jobs. So if I put them in the caverns they'd all starve.

Butchery is the only option.

I am sad.
