I always construct a large natural stone Vault underground to store all of my valuables.
This time, it's under the second cavern, in the middle of a marble layer. The whole thing is smoothed and engraved, and guarded by two doors.
Inside is two stockpiles.
The first contains every artifact my fortress has ever made, with the exception of an artifact trap component that sits in a weapon trap in my front door.

Since 90% of my fortress's artifacts are
crap "special," I usually
chuck "store" them in a
nondescript "inconspicuous"
hole-in-the-wall "hole-in-the-wall" at the very lowest level of my fortress.
Considering how
far from my disappointed eyes "deeply" they've been hidden, and that the halls they're in are so big, and empty (nothing but engraved walls and undumped stone) they're probably incredibly safe.
Oh, here's the rest of level they're on: [warning:big .png]

Trash dropped by Goblin Sieges when they try to enter my land:

The 3rd Cell is well on it's way to being full and I've still barely made a dent in the oceans of garbage on the surface traps. I could toss them in that chasm near by, but meh.
But no, I guess I do have a special sort of vault for the most cherished of objects my fortress. It's guarded by uncounted weapon/stone/cage traps, 30-some war dogs, an array of early warning horses, more traps, and about 250 surly, vomit-soaked beards-on-legs: [much smaller image]
My greatest champion's sarcophagus, my favorite artifact (his platinum gauntlet,) oh and the Queen who had him killed for having a nicer burial chamber ...buried alive with him.
