Vaults! Keep your shinies in there!
« on: August 13, 2010, 12:10:10 pm »

I always construct a large natural stone Vault underground to store all of my valuables.

This time, it's under the second cavern, in the middle of a marble layer. The whole thing is smoothed and engraved, and guarded by two doors.

Inside is two stockpiles.

The first contains every artifact my fortress has ever made, with the exception of an artifact trap component that sits in a weapon trap in my front door.

The second contains a coin stockpile. I mint 3 or 4 different metals of coins every year to celebrate the turning of the calender year, usually gold and silver and then two other metals, somewhat randomly chosen.

The doors are kept sealed via mechanisms, connected to a lever that sits in my mayors room that only he can pull. Every year after the coins are done being minted, I have him pull the lever, and that year's artifacts and coins are taken underground to be sealed up and kept safely.

I think I might put some statues down there as well, my Dwarves just made a statue of this world's deity of gems and valuables.

What about you guys? How do you keep your artifacts? Put them in hallways so people can see them, just leave them around, or store them in a vault deep underground?

Bonus points if your vault is guarded with a solid wall of water or magma that has to be first taken care of with a complex obsidian making process before the things can be reached.

I put my artifacts to use. Frankly, they're a dime a dozen after 20 years or so. In particular artifacts that I can put in rooms usually end up in my great dining halls or statue gardens for all to "ooooooh" at.

I make a special vault for anything adamantine. It's the only resource that is scarce.

Do you have display cases in your game? In retrospect I wish I had modded in display cases before I started my fortress, and my fortress is too far along to start over.

I don't make vaults like that, but instead I make my tombs like that. Elaborate, fully engraved catacombs heavily decorated with statues and protected by utterly excessive and overly complex traps.

I've never been one for stockpiles so most artifacts end up sitting in whatever shop they were made at.

I like having a dwarf dig a one-tile channel down 15 or so Z-levels, gradually expanding it to a sort of basin shape.  The only way in is a 15 story drop.  I can't dump artifacts into it, of course, but masterful large faint yellow diamonds?  Gold crowns encrusted with star sapphire?  Gold coins?  Adamantine weapons and armor?  All into the hole.

As for the dwarf that digs it?  Well, his bones get to rest under a mountain of treasure.  And he was probably a mayor that liked adamantine.

Q: What do you get when you take 100 clear glass windows, 1000 silver bars, 6700 gold bars, and 18,000 marble blocks?

A: A very large wall.

Why'd it have to be snakes?

You know those islands of rock in the middle of the magma seas at the bottom of the map? Let's call the lowest z-level of mineable rock z=0. I wanted the following setup in one of my latest fortresses:

z = 3: Farms and stuff.
z = 2: A treefarm, connected to the vault with a staircase.
z = 1: A pond of water in the middle of the magma sea.
z = 0: A vault for artifacts, accessable with a staircase.
z = -1 ff: Semi-molten rocks, slade, and the rest.

I think that you would get fun stuff happening in real life physics if you put a lot of water near magma, so I went for this layout.

I always mint some coins for each year. Gold, Silver, and Platinum. I might use Billon in a new fort. Or use a special metal like Antimony or Palladium to commemorate a siege or megabeast.

It's always nice seeing the images they are decorated, and even better if the civilisation has a remarkable symbol.

I currently place all of the useful on (such as tables and beds) inside the fort itself for use by Dwarves. But later on once I being construction of the tower I'm probably going to store them in there.

Wait, coins work? How? I set some coins to be minted, and it was the only job available to four metalsmiths. Does it only work with a certain noble in or something?

You can mint coins whenever you like, each appearing in a stack of 500. Each 'run' will have a decoration theme, plus the image of the civilisation's symbol on the other side. So, every Gold 304 coin will feature the image of the founding of the fortress. The Silver 304 might have an image of a goblin being struck down in 278 by Tholtig Tinscrapes the Golden Smiles. But in 305, the Silver coin will feature a wolf eating a kobold.

I really like them, as they feature a bit of history, like hand-held engravings. Every year and metal combination will have a different decoration.

And don't leave the economy on. It makes sadness.
